Salsa or Die - A Short Story in the Silver Night Collection. A Hen Lit, Not a Chick Lit A moving, but also humorous love story about a couple in their sixties who are struggling to cope with the new lifestyle changes forced on them through redundancy. Pam, the narrator, wants more from life, while Jeff her husband of forty years wants peace of mind. "The relationship...is one that anyone in a couple can understand and relate to; especially those that consider themselves to have sunk into a rut. The threat of something new challenges their old way of life, even something as simple as salsa dancing." C.S from the UK. Salsa offers Pam an opportunity of excitement each week, particularly as Victor, a regular, takes a fancy to her and becomes determined to help improve her moves. She struggles between the loyalty to her husband and the draw of a new adventure. "The use of a first person narrative is an interesting approach to this story as it automatically brings the reader in on an equal level and allows them to be privy to the inner most emotions that the narrator feels."… (mere)

A quick read. Doesn't break new ground or challenge the reader, but it gave me something easy to breeze through in a hospital waiting room the other day. Just when I thought the story had been set up to go somewhere, it zoomed to a quick, too-formulaic resolution. I thought that the author could have actually explored some interesting ground in middle-aged marital relationships, but skipped through the conflict in an unrealistic, overly tidy way. Not particularly satisfying . (I have to admit that when I saw that the title included the phrase, "A Silver Night Romance," I was puzzled to discover that I had requested a copy through the Members Giveaway program. Not my usual genre.) ( )

Pam and Jeff have been married almost 40 years and Pam wanted to do something fun since they have gotten into a rut. Jeff lost his job a while back and after a lot of searching and rejections he has given up searching and prefers to sit and watch television. Pam works with her best friend Julie so Julie suggests they go out and do something fun to help keep Pam out of the doldrums. Julie lets Pam pick from a bunch of pamphlets and Pam decides she wants to take salsa dancing lessons. Julie isn't so sure about the dance lessons but agrees to go with Pam. Pam would love to have Jeff be her dance partner but he's just not interested in much of anything these days. Pam and Julie take the dance lessons and they both really enjoy it. When Jeff sees the way Pam is all dolled up for her lessons, he notices, but still has no intention of going with her. Pam drives Jeff's car, which is his baby, and winds up in a minor fender bender. She's not hurt but the car is banged up. Hysterical, she calls Jeff fearing the worst. Surprising her, he says he will take a taxi and be right there. He realizes that she is much more important than the car and they really do love each other. This was a wonderful story and I didn't want it to end. I absolutely loved this book and I highly recommend it! ( )
