Winner of the 2016 Best Debut Author (on Goodreads), I was interested to read this one. A combination Western/Arabian story, the book has its strengths and weaknesses. The world building was strong, especially so in respect of some of the magical, deity and cultural elements and also the various settings: villages, cities, caravans. oases, caves, etc. The main characters were solid: Amani, whose goal in life is to escape her dreary life and lecherous adoptive father and the mysterious Jin. I think their relationship was cemented well within the first 10 pages at a sharpshooting competition. At points, I found the book drifted into unnecessary and uninteresting detail, and I had trouble distinguishing the brothers/sisters of Jin as well as their talents. I think a listing would be a good addition for future printings (and the e-book.) Like most of my GR friends, I think this is 3.5 stars. ( )

3.5 Stars

This book wasn't terrible. I did find myself rolling my eyes every few times Jin and Amani interacted, but the plot definitely had potential. I didn't know what the plot was half the time because it kept changing and was as wishy-washy as the main character-- but it was okay.

I agree with most people who have done reviews of this book: wasn't great, wasn't awful.

I will disagree with them about it being boring, though. It was slow at some points, but that didn't bother me. I usually find myself drawn to the journey/adventure stories where they are on the road for long periods of time. I feel like those books have the best character development and drag out like the journey does. It brings me into the story a little bit more, so that didn't bother me.

What did bother me was that the character development on said journey seemed so forced. Maybe it's because it's a YA novel, but I didn't like being explicitly told about the character development again and again.. and again.

Overall it wasn't bad. I might pick up the sequel. Hopefully the cover is as pretty as this one was.. ( )

One and a half for me, the half is because I got to the end. I'm probably the wrong audience for this it felt very much like a basic YA story. Wouldn't you know it the love interest ended up being a prince...also I really dislike westerns in fantasy. ( )

This is a story set at an unspecified time, in an unspecified place, about the escape of heroine Amani from an unloved and increasingly desperate existence.
The opening of the novel promises much. Amani is in an unexpected situation which demands skill and cunning to survive, as she must, incognito. In this episode the reader is introduced to another of the main characters, and this relationship clearly has potential. Elemental and personal magic are the other essential elements in the book, and the first of these is instrumental in Amani's escape.
Unfortunately, the middle section was, for me, somewhat confusing and slow. It is not always clear who is who (friend or foe), and I just couldn't get a handle on the plot. I was very close to giving up, but I pressed on and finally the book began to move forward. The last section resembles the opening, being crisper and fulfilling the earlier promise somewhat.
This is a debut novel and I could see flashes of great writing, but it wasn't quite there I think. Look forward to the next one! ( )

Very good YA. Reminiscent of Sara Maas, Rae Carson, and Tanya Huff's Damar duo. ( )
