"In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of Enemy Women that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust. In the wake of the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence. In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna's parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows.Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act "civilized." Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely survivors tentatively begin to trust each other, forming a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land.Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not remember--strangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate or become--in the eyes of the law--a kidnapper himself"--… (mere)

Wonderful story with historical details of life in Texas just after the Civil War, white captives of the Indians, and a man making a living an an itinerant reader of newspapers. Both the main character and the ex-captive little girl he agrees to return to her family are sympathetic characters and have interesting adventures together on their journey until a real respect and love grow between them. It's a harsh world, but there is a real sense of belonging in the end. ( )

Captain Kidd travels reading the news, but when he accepts a commission to return a 10 year old girl to her family after living with the Kiowa for four years, his true courage and care shine through ( )

I found the story compelling, the characters fascinating, and the use of language amazing. It really boiled down to examining the issues faced by a lonely man haunted by wartime and family memories, and his sudden acquisition of a traumatized girl whose birth family was killed, and who was torn from her adoptive Kiowa family to be returned to relatives she doesn't know. A lot of what kept me interest was seeing the bond form between them as the book went on, as well as wondering if they would survive all the perils that a post Civil war Texas could throw at them. So there is also some adventure thrown into the story as well, and wonderful descriptions of the landscape and people that they encounter along the way. I would recommend this to anyone, and especially those that enjoy historical fiction, western tales, and well told stories. ( )

Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd is an interesting blend of pragmatist and dreamer, and he introduced me to an occupation that I'd been completely unaware of: that of a traveling newsreader who brings the outside world to people hungry for news. It's his belief that "If people had true knowledge of the world perhaps they would not take up arms and so perhaps he could be an aggregator of information from distant places and then the world would be a more peaceful place." Watching his character develop-- as well as that of the young Johanna-- is the best part of News of the World, and Paulette Jiles gives a strong, steady pulse to her characters and setting.

Kidd is a man in his early seventies who has grown children as well as grandchildren. A printer by trade, he's grown accustomed to his nomadic, solitary existence, so watching the growing bond between the old man and his young charge as they make their perilous way through Texas is a quiet thing of beauty.

Perhaps it is because I felt so invested in the characters that I had an adverse reaction to the way Jiles concluded her book. The ending felt rushed as it galloped through several years. I would have much preferred that News of the World gave those years the treatment they deserved, or that the book ended when little Johanna finally arrived home. When all is said and done, I found Jiles' novel to be an absorbing read that was marred by its conclusion. ( )

I would not have known about this book if the movie hadn't been released. I knew I couldn't see the movie until I read the book. Now I just pray that the movie is half as good as the book. Jiles takes a tragic event and turns it into a happy ending. It was hard to believe that what this child went through was based on historical events. ( )

Britt's own wife and two children had been taken captive six years ago, in 1864, and he had gone out and got them back. Nobody knew quite how he had done it. He seemed to have some celestial protection about him when he rode out alone on the Red Rolling Plains, a place which seemed to invite both death and dangers. Britt had taken on the task of rescuing others, a dark man, cunning and strong and fast like a nightjar in the midnight air.
Long bright crawls of water slid across the livery stable floor and took up the light of the lantern like a luminous stain and the roof shook with the percussion of drops as big as nickels.
A light drizzle drifted through the landscape of cranky post oak trees whose limbs did not have six inches of straight any of in them.
Then she seemed to struggle with a tangled thing inside her head, something knotted that would not unknot.
Above and behind them the Dipper turned on its great handle as if to pour night itself out onto the dreaming continent and each of its seven stars gleamed from between the fitful passing clouds.
