I liked this book for two reasons. One reason is that the book discusses and overcomes the anxiety of the first day of school. The main character, a young boy in pre k or kindergarten, is nervous about the first day of school. He exclaims to his parents that he is “NOT going to school…!” because on the first day “…you don’t know anything!” He is afraid to get to school and not know what to do, where this cubby is, or what they will have for snack. But the fear of the unknown is conquered and the little boy ended up enjoying school. The illustrations in the book portray diversity with many different ethnicities being present in the classroom. For example, the story introduces a Caucasian teacher “Mr. Chase” and an Asian teacher “Ms. Chen”. The pictures of the students include many different backgrounds and genders all getting along together. The overall message of the story is that school is a safe place to learn. Even when you’re nervous, you can overcome your fear and have fun learning. ( )
