I have this recorded as "Flandry of Terra" but the computer has given me this title, perhaps this comes from the days when the USA only recognized copyright if it had been established in the USA, and theirs piracy of other titles was wide-spread, thus the differing world and USA titles.... The book itself is amusing enough, as the poetic justice and cynical approach of the name character pleased me. More of a set of 4 novelettes than a novel, this still reads nicely as one whole book. Dominic Flandry is a future James Bond, sent all over the galaxy to thwart the enemies of the Terran Empire, and get the girl while he's at it. Not sophisticated, clever or tremendously thoughtful, but very enjoyable. This is the third book of the Flandry series. It contains stories set chronologically after the events of Ensign Flandry and Flandry of Terra, but the stories were written earlier. Much of Anderson's work arises from his short stories, and, like many other authors of his era, he didn't write his stories in order, rather writing them based upon what story he wanted to write at the time (and to a certain extent, what he thought he could sell). The stories were later stitched into some sort of time line. The four stories in this collection show Flandry in his prime as an intelligence agent working for the declining Terran Empire. The four tales contain elements of classic space opera: rescuing princesses, escaping from hostile aliens, exploring the cause of an unexplained attack, dealing with a telepathic opponent and so on. Slightly more thoughtful than the typical swashbuckling hero (Flandry realizes that the Empire he fights for is doomed, and seeks only to postpone that doom beyond his own lifetime), Flandry is my favorite example of the type. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
Flandry, here a captain, undergoes a series of adventures: He is abducted by the Scothians, an alien race hoping to invade the Terran Empire; rescues the Emperor's kidnapped granddaughter; meets Aycharaych, his nemesis in league with the Merseians; and investigates a previously unencountered alien race that has invaded the distant colonial world of Vixen.
