A canny young woman is struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of mostly harmless fraud. On a rainy April morning, she is reading auras at Spiritual Palms when Susan Burke walks in. A keen observer of human behavior, our unnamed narrator immediately diagnoses beautiful, rich Susan as an unhappy woman eager to give her lovely life a drama injection. However, when the "psychic" visits the eerie Victorian home that has been the source of Susan's terror and grief, she realizes she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore. Miles, Susan's teenage stepson, doesn't help matters with his disturbing manner and grisly imagination. The three are soon locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it.… (mere)

Maybe more of a 2.5 but I’m rounding up. This could have been a REALLY snappy, creepy punch of a read: the premise and initial setup are promising and have the potential to be like an adult Scooby Doo episode. I like the idea and all the morally gray or just outright chaotic characters. But the harried ending and whiplash of theories gives the overall impression that Flynn really thought she was doing something when in fact she was not. This is really a case of a book that could have benefited from have a solid 200 pages to give a stunning story. ( )

who and what do i believe? i don't know! this was good that's all i know. gillian flynn did a lot in 67 pages. if the start of this book doesn't catch your attention, no book will. this was interesting and weird and the crafty ending is little cliff hanger ( )

Compelling little novella full of twists and turns, and a nice surprise bonus from Book of the Month. Thoroughly compelling! ( )

I had finished my audiobook and hadn't picked my next one so I listened to this short story, fun but still full of detail and surprises ( )

"To me, it's a nice day's work when you make a lot of people smile. I know that sounds too earnest, but it's true. I mean, I would rather be a librarian, but I worry about the job security. Books may be temporary. Dicks are forever."

Maybe it's just the day I'm having, but this made me laugh. This short story had the usual Gillian Flynn acerbic female protagonist, but with a slight twist on the unreliable narrator tricks. It was a fun ride. ( )
