But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined. Now, a sixteen year old Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic--the Red Church. Treachery and trials await her with the Church's halls, and to fail is to die. I loved this book. It was so interesting to me. This was like nothing I had read. This book was about a school for assassins. Specifically, this is a book about a girl named Mia who wants to become an assassin so she can get revenge for her father who was hanged and for her mother and her younger brother who were locked up in an infamous prison where she was left for madness. (Also in this prison once a year most of the prisoners brutally try to murder each other because whoever is left standing gets released.) This book had all the right twists and turns in my opinion. Anytime I started to wonder about a specific plot point or person who had been introduced, they would reappear, so I found the pacing to be really good. I really loved the plot of this book. Yes, there are other books where specific types of people go to a school to hone their talents (Harry Potter), but this felt quite unique to me. I never felt like I had already read it in a different form before. I also loved the main character, Mia. Mia has the power to control shadows, she's a darklin. She doesn't really know anything about her abilities or what she actually is because there are almost no other people who share her power. Many people at the school say she has been chosen by the night goddess, but she isn't sure she believes that. She is a very determined person but she grows a lot over the course of the story which was very enjoyable for me to read. I really liked watching her come into her own at the school and figuring out how to harness her powers and let go of her past. She was definitely a fascinating main character. I also loved all the secondary characters. My favorite was Naev. She was very spunky in my opinion. She worked as a hand in the assassin school that Mia is at and Mia helped her on the way to the school. I feel that sometimes with these kinds of characters who give the main characters advice and just work in the background can all have the same personality but Naev was very determined and very strong willed and very much not a push over, She would help Mia throughout the book but only after Mia proved herself to Naev. I also loved the character of Tric. Tric is another student at the assassin school and travels there with Mia. He is also kind of the love interest. He has an incredibly interesting backstory and a very strong personality. He is very self-conscience of his background and where he comes from and his early life and it is very interesting to see that come out throughout this book. All the other characters have similar strong personalities that I would expect from a group of assassins. I also really enjoyed reading about the school itself. In the school, all the student go to different classes that will help them become a great assassin in the hope that at the end they will be one of the few chosen to become a blade. Everyone who does not become a blade will become a hand and work at the school. At the school, we read about four teachers along with a librarian, the headmistress, and the leader of the blades. One of the teachers teaches swordplay, one teaches pickpocketing, one teaches poisons, and one teaches manipulation through sex and persuasion. All these teachers pose a challenge to the students and winning that challenge is one way to become a blade. I found these challenges to be fascinating. They were all so detailed and cool. I also loved the librarian characters. He was so intriguing and definitely a voice of reasons. The world-building in this book was also incredible. It was so interesting to read about a world with three suns based on Italy and ancient Rome. Reading about the political subterfuge and the underworld of assassins was really cool. I loved reading about the religion in this book and the systems of punishment and justice. A lot of the history of this book was told in footnotes in this book which I loved. I love footnotes in my books and I think it was a really clever way to explain the history of the world. There were also flashbacks in the beginning of a lot of the chapters that explained why Mia wanted to become an assassin. Sometimes I really don't like consistent flashbacks because it can rip me out of the story but I feel it was done well. The ending left enough open that I'm not disappointed but very excited for the next book and there we some twists that I never saw coming that were executed very well. I cannot wait for the next book to come out. If you are thinking about reading this book, do so and do it quickly! ( )

At first the writing style threw me off and made it hard to get used to the story but after some chapters the story got interesting and I began appreciating the flourishes and metaphors.
Mid Corvere is one of the fiercest female characters I've encountered in a while. I can't stress this enough: this is not a young adult book. There are some scenes that are either too violent or too sexy for younger readers.
Finally, be warned that Jay Kristoff is not afraid to kill off characters. Damn you, Jay. Why him?! :( ( )

Congratulations ... this is the first book in my life that I have wanted to abandoned after reading a mere 4 pages. [edit] And after reading a review of the book promising that it would get better if only I persevered, I did manage to finish the it. And it did get better (the reviews also helped understand what the hell the author was trying to do with the very strange literary style in the beginning ... very artsy ... and not enjoyable at all). At any rate ... if you run into the same issue at the start, skip over a couple of chapters and continue ... you just might be able to enjoy the rest of the story. Still not sure if I will try the next book yet. ( )

Final review
I know I love badass female assassins. I know I love the idea of training. And I still waited all this time to read Nevernight.... why oh why do I do this to myself 😣😣😣😣 This book transported to a new world, made me fall in love with all these awesome characters, and then stabbed my heart over and over again till I was left wailing.

Mia is an excellent protagonist to follow. She is smart, intelligent, strong and sassy and her only goal since she was ten has been to become an assassin capable of getting revenge for the deaths of her family. She also has the ability of interacting with shadows and has a constant companion, a shadow cat named Mr. Kindly, who is always there with her absorbing her fears and advising and helping her. Their conversations are some of the most funniest and sarcastic in the whole book. But despite striving to be this ruthless assassin, Mia has her moments of vulnerability and compassion which truly depicts her humanity and I loved this characterization. Her bisexuality is also treated very naturally and there is no questioning or hate because of it, which I thought was wonderful.

The world building is quite unique in this book and I really enjoyed getting to know more about it. The maps of the Republic of Itreya and the city of Godsgrave at the beginning of the book are some of the most gorgeous and intricate ones you will find in fantasy. The setting of Godsgrave is very much based on Venice and the descriptions give us a lot to imagine. Church of Our Lady of Blessed Murder also called the Red Church, where Mia goes to become an assassin is like a highly darker version of Hogwarts. The students attend classes to learn the arts of fighting, poisons, thieving and seduction. The professors are masters in their subjects, but don't think twice before brutally injuring the students or trying to poison or torture them. The fact that only a few students would qualify to become the Blades at the end of their training ensures the persistence of rivalry and sabotage among them which even leads to murder.

The writing in the book is something that takes getting used to. Almost the first third of the book feels difficult, because we are thrust into this new world and the vocabulary feels unfamiliar. But once Mia enters the Red Church, I did not want to put the book down. It's a whirlwind of murder, blood, brutality, violence and Mia's struggle to retain the parts of her that are still human and not become a mindless assassin ready to kill anybody. I spent the last third of the book at the edge of my seat because the twists kept hitting me, the betrayals blindsided me and I just waited with bated breath to see what was going to happen next. The footnotes in this book are definitely a unique part of the worldbuilding, which might not appeal to everyone but I really enjoyed them. They gave me more context about the culture and beliefs of the people and also had some funny historical stories.

This was such a thrilling ride of a book. I enjoyed every second of it and I'm already very excited for Godsgrave, but apparently it has a cliffhanger 😭😭😭. I recommend this book to everyone who loves stories about assassins and their training, an awesome cast of morally grey characters, alongwith a huge dose of blood and gore. My only caution is that if you want to preserve your sanity, don't get attached to the characters, because you never know who will break your heart.

First Thoughts
Wow... this is dark and bloody and brutal.. what twists that I never saw coming... My mind is blown right now 🤯🤯🤯

So far it is not too my liking this writing style.
especially the * put it in the story especially page 15 which would just fit next to it.
I'll try to see if I can get used to it or if will fray my patience with it before completing the book.

To much typography (*†‡) for me that links to the end of the page explaining some detail which should be explained by the character herself and not at the end of a page...
