"A generation ago, the city of Voortyashtan was the stronghold of the god of war and death, the birthplace of fearsome supernatural sentinels who killed and subjugated millions. Now, the city's god is dead. The city itself lies in ruins. And to its new military occupiers, the once-powerful capital is a wasteland of sectarian violence and bloody uprisings. So it makes perfect sense that General Turyin Mulaghesh--foul-mouthed hero of the battle of Bulikov, rumored war criminal, ally of an embattled Prime Minister--has been exiled there to count down the days until she can draw her pension and be forgotten. At least, it makes the perfect cover story"--Amazon.com.… (mere)

An absolutely brilliant book.

I was a bit sceptical about the idea of a sequel to City of Stairs, but then again the world built up in the previous book definitely had a lot of potential.

This book is very different. Whether its because of the ubiquity of modern tech, or the grimmer issues it chooses to grapple with, this book is darker, and more complex. While it may seem quite similar to the previous book in theme, that is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact I am wondering whether this series will have a thematic continuity which will mature and climax in a big reveal

The characters, dialogue and action in this book are all excellent. I especially loved the ending. It fitted in very well with the ideas explored and the development of the main character ( )

When I finished City of Stairs, I mentioned that while that book felt like a first attempt (which I stand by), I saw potential in the series as a whole. I can now happily say that this potential was definitely fulfilled. Not necessarily surpassed, but definitely fulfilled. The scope, while technically comparable to Stairs, felt way bigger. This could have just been because of our previous info about this world from Stairs, but either way the events seem larger and more important than the last book, even if they weren't really, which is a plus. The characters have been tightened up considerably, especially Sigrud, who I didn't really get the hype behind. Yeah, he was cool and badass already, but here we get a little bit more of a look into the harder parts of his character. However, this statement has the exception of one Rada. At no point in her (extensive) character arc did I buy anything about her, and since she is so important, I would call her the worst part of the entire book. Mulaghesh, on the other hand, is nothing but a treat, especially compared to the incredibly boring (in my opinion) Shara.

All in all, definitely worth the lackluster start to this trilogy, and looking forward to the finale. ( )

Five years after the events of City of Stairs, Shara Komayd pulls General Turyin Mulaghesh out of retirement to investigate the disappearance of a Ministry agent sent to assess the discovery of an amazing new metal. This time we are taken to Voortyashtan, the former Continental stronghold of the divinity Voortya—Empress of Graves, Maiden of Steel, Queen of Grief, She Who Clove the Earth in Twain, and war goddess of the terrifying Voortyashtani warriors.

A brilliant blend of high fantasy and espionage thriller. Fast-paced and thought-provoking. An excellent second novel in the world of The Divine Cities. ( )

Such a fascinating, multi-layered world. The characters are so strong, especially Mulaghesh, someone that will stick in my mind. Bennett makes the intersection of the everyday and divine very believeable and compelling. Beautifully written, quick-paced and often striking in its imagery and action. ( )

Quite extraordinary. [a:Robert Jackson Bennett|2916869|Robert Jackson Bennett|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1328633063p2/2916869.jpg] has a knack for putting the reader (or at least this reader) through a startling range of emotion. The story is complex, the themes are straightforward. The writing is quite concrete, yet soars. Such exquisite character development, and growth. I am fortunate to be reading this series after completion; it would have been a struggle to wait for the third book in the series, but now it's ready and waiting. Perhaps a bit of time for this one to settle first, though.... ( )
