Bouquets of babies sweet to hold: cocoa-brown, cinnamon, and honey gold. Ginger-coloured babies, peaches and cream, too--splendid skin for me, splendid skin for you! A delightfully rhythmical read-aloud text is paired with bright, bustling art from the award-winning Lauren Tobia, illustrator of Anna Hibiscus, in this joyful exploration of the new skin of babyhood. A wonderful gift book for new mums and toddlers; all children can see themselves, and open their eyes to the world around them, in this sweet, scrumptious celebration of skin in all its many, many, wonderful forms.… (mere)

This is such a sweet book and would be a great one to read with kids. It shows kids that all look different and celebrates each person. The message of this book is self-love and acceptance of others. The illustrations are well done, and I just love the feeling that this book leave me with! ( )

I liked this book for two reasons, the illustrations and the language usage. First, the illustrations enhance the story. In the story for example, Fran states “Sometimes skin has freckles or birthmarks or dimples.” The illustration for this statement shows the different types of skins with different marks on children’s faces. It is a vivid illustration for children to understand the different types of marks our skin can have. Second, the language used was very clear and descriptive. On one page, Fran describes the different skin colors, “Bouquets of babies sweet to hold: cocoa brown, cinnamon, and honey gold.” Fran describes how important our skin is and functions no matter the color. This is a wonderful little story filled with a variety of children from different cultures.

I think this book would be perfect for teaching diversity and have the children love themselves. It also talks about it's okay to be different. In our classes, we are talking about how to bring up diversity and what kind of materials we should use. I believe that we should use this book to help provide literature.

This book is about accepting one's self and being proud of one's own skin/ racial heritage.

Fran Manushkin's picture book teaches children about the skin we all live in. Babies born in all different colors. Children and adults with freckles, skin that tans and grows with us. The pictures are large and very colorful, with one or two sentences per page. The rhyming of the book makes it interesting and fun to read.
