One of the few books to give an overview of every gnostic book within the nag hammadi library. And, it's usually a pretty good one. The only downside is that the Catholic author seems at times a little overly worried that someone might decide to abandon his religion for one of the gnostic revivals. As such, it's very much a product of the time it was written. I'm sure it was picked up in the first place because the da vinci code was still the hot news of the day, and gnosticism as a looming potential threat to mainstream religion also sits soundly on that wave.
