Araminta Ross was born a slave in Delaware in the early 19th century. Slavery meant that her family could be ripped apart at any time, and that she could be put to work in dangerous places and for abusive people. But north of the Mason-Dixon line, slavery was illegal. If she could run away and make it north without being caught or killed, she'd be free. Facing enormous danger, Araminta made it, and once free, she changed her name to Harriet Tubman. Tubman spent the rest of her life helping slaves run away like she did, every time taking her life in her hands.… (mere)

A graphic novel biography of Harriet Tubman introduces readers to the abolitionist movement, including sidebar stories about Nat Turner and Frederick Douglass. Bibliography.

Middle-grade graphic biography of Harriet Tubman. I learned a lot about Tubman's history, but the style is a little too irreverent for my taste. My 11yo loved the book, and it has prompted lots of conversations, but he's a little more accustomed to the graphic format than I am.

From the Build Your Library homeschool curriculum level 6 booklist. ( )

This is the first of the Hazardous Tales series I've read. Super impressed and buying the rest of them for my libraries! ( )

Love, love, love this book. Author/illustrator Nathan Hale knows how to make history come to life in a compelling, entertaining, and slightly daunting way. This is the story of Harriet Tubman, someone who's exploits we are all so familiar with, you'd think it'd be hard to pull a new hook. But you'd be wrong. My daughter devoured this book, then started reading it all over again. I had to find out what was so alluring about a detailed history, so I started reading it and ended up devouring it, too. Even the backmatter is memorable. I don't want to mention too much about the contents -- you'd be much better off enjoying Hale's rendition -- but I will say both my daughter and I learned a lot about Harriet Tubman and can't wait to read more Hazardous Tales. I will also add that this book is not necessarily for everyone -- while it doesn't sensationalize violence or gore, it doesn't shy away from it; and if you are the type of person that thinks educational products should not be entertaining, you are sure to disapprove.
