Once the thriving attraction of rural Vermont, the Tower Motel now stands in disrepair, alive only in the memories of Amy, Piper, and Piper's kid sister, Margot. The three played there as girls until the day that their games uncovered something dark and twisted in the motel's past, something that ruined their friendship forever. Now adults, Piper and Margot have tried to forget what they found that fateful summer, but their lives are upended when Piper receives a panicked midnight call from Margot, with news of a horrific crime for which Amy stands accused. Suddenly, Margot and Piper are forced to relive the time that they found the suitcase that once belonged to Silvie Slater, the aunt that Amy claimed had run away to Hollywood to live out her dream of becoming Hitchcock's next blonde bombshell leading lady. As Margot and Piper investigate, a cleverly woven plot unfolds--revealing the story of Sylvie and Rose, two other sisters who lived at the motel during its 1950s heyday. Each believed the other to be something truly monstrous, but only one carries the secret that would haunt the generations to come.… (mere)

A bit of an overlong slog - unrewarding in both characterization and resolution. ( )

I have always liked McMahon's work, and this book didn't disappoint. She has a great grasp for mystery and psychological drama. I could see influences this time from King and Koontz; very satisfying horror elements in this novel. ( )

This is my second book by the author. I enjoyed my first endeavor, The Winter People, but I liked this one so much more. The characters were easy to connect with and there were plenty of twists and turns. And it had a good creepy feel like I used to enjoy when I read old Stephen King books back in the 80s and 90s.

The story moves between three time frames and a few different POVs, which made me wonder if I'd be able to stay involved and connect with any of the characters. I was hooked pretty early on and stayed that way.

The narrator is Cassandra Campbell who did The Winter People (and Orange is the New Black, among other things) and I already knew I enjoyed her work. A good reader makes a world of difference.

So I definitely recommend this one! ( )

huh!!!! huh!!!!!!!!! okay, girlf's writing is flipping gorgeous and this had a great sense of creeping atmosphere throughout AND I was a bit surprised by twists towards the end!! it wasn't particularly substantial but you know what, it didn't need to be. ( )
