"In 1843, fragile naturalist Zadock Thomas must leave his beloved in Chicago to deliver a secret letter to an infamous general on the front lines of the war over Texas. The fate of the volatile republic, along with Zadock's future, depends on his mission. When a cloud of bats leads him off the trail, he happens upon something impossible ... Three hundred years later, the world has collapsed and the remnants of humanity cling to a strange society of paranoia. Zeke Thomas has inherited a sealed envelope from his grandfather, an esteemed senator. When that letter goes missing, Zeke engages a fomenting rebellion that could free him--if it doesn't destroy his relationship, his family legacy, and the entire republic first. As their stories overlap and history itself begins to unravel, a war in time erupts between a lost civilization, a forgotten future, and the chaos of the wild."--Amazon.com.… (mere)

This truly weird & wonderful two-story read is unlike anything I've ever read.

A novel that is set in 1843 Chicago & three hundred years later in the dystopian city-state of The Texas Republic, this love story/mystery will keep you reading. creative, wacky & weird; a book that is gorgeous in both story & art...with Bats! ( )

Part novel, part scrapbook, part field guide, Bats of the Republic uses prose interspersed with letters, newspaper clippings, maps, and illustrations to create an immersive experience for the reader. The novel contains two stories, separated by 300 years but united by a mysterious letter (enclosed in an envelope at the very end). Due to its unique format, Bats of the Republic can feel unwieldy at times and there is a bit of a learning curve to following both parallel storylines. However, I give kudos to Zachary Thomas Dodson for creating one of the most innovative (and beautiful) works of fiction. ( )

Great book. I have to recommend a physical copy, but if you want to go electronic you only be missing a little bit of the magic...the story would hold up either way.

Without spoiling, the last paragraph of the book made me jump out of my chair, but that was probably specific to me. ( )

This book had an interesting premise, but I had a hard time emotionally connecting with the characters. It could have been a sweeping epic but for the personal communications used to deliver most of the story. It was a more intimate way of telling the story, but I wanted the characters to be more accessible with that format, and I didn't feel like they were. Others may feel differently.

Regardless of my issues with the text, the visuals of the book made up for a lot of that. It is a beautiful book. ( )
