Mitch Albom creates his most unforgettable fictional character--Frankie Presto, the greatest guitarist to ever walk the earth--in this magical novel about the bands we join in life and the power of talent to change our lives. An epic story of the greatest guitar player to ever live, and the six lives he changed with his magical blue strings. In Albom's most sweeping novel yet, the voice of Music narrates the tale of its most beloved disciple, young Frankie Presto, a war orphan raised by a blind music teacher in a small Spanish town. At nine years old, Frankie is sent to America in the bottom of a boat. His only possession is an old guitar and six precious strings. But Frankie's talent is touched by the gods, and his amazing journey weaves him through the musical landscape of the 20th century, from classical to jazz to rock and roll, with his stunning talent affecting numerous stars along the way, including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Wynton Marsalis and even KISS. Frankie becomes a pop star himself. He makes records. He is adored. But his gift is also his burden, as he realizes, through his music, he can actually affect people's futures--with one string turning blue whenever a life is altered. At the height of his popularity, Frankie Presto vanishes. His legend grows. Only decades later, does he reappear--just before his spectacular death--to change one last life. With its Forest Gump-like romp through the music world, The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is a classic in the making. A lifelong musician himself, Mitch Albom delivers a remarkable novel, infused with the message that "everyone joins a band in this life" and those connections change us all. The complete list of narrators includes Mitch Albom, Roger McGuinn, Ingrid Michaelson, John Pizzarelli, Paul Stanley, George Guidall, Mike Hodge, Robin Miles, Christian Baskous, Tony Chiroldes, Kevin O'Neil, Adriana Sananes, Ken Brown, and Sarab Kamoo.… (mere)

Uniquely written with the narration by "Music" this is a sweet book of a talented guitarist life. The ups and downs, the love and tragedy, it was really enjoyable. I loved the descriptions told from a musical background and the weaving of real life artists into the story. A great read. ( )

Because the narrator of most of the story is Music, you enjoy a uniquely creative, fresh perspective with rich musical insight. I was moved to tears more than once as it reminded me of my son and his unexplained musical aptitude. Love how Albom makes a fictional story so believable while weaving in magical elements. Fans of any music genre, from classical to country, will get a kick out of all the real-life legends Albom ties into the journey of Frankie Presto (Forrest Gump style). Be sure to read the acknowledgements where you find out about the author's behind-the-scenes relationships with each of the music icons, and discover which quotes and stories are actually true.

Everyone joins a band in this life.

Narrated by the voice of Music (yes, really), Mitch Albom's novel follows the epic life of fictional guitar virtuoso Frankie Presto. Modern music legends, from Duke Ellington to Burt Bacharach, make cameo appearances over the course of Frankie's life, in a story infused with a love of music, a sprinkle of magic, and a message about how the connections we make change us.

I listened to the audiobook, which I ought not to recommend over the print book without ever reading the print book. But the award-winning audiobook has an inspired narrative cast standing in for the music legends, with charming results.

The Magic Strings may be best suited to the music aficionado or the Mitch Albom fan.

This is the perfect "feel-good" story to take you out of a sad place. Though it contains some of the Albom schmaltz, it presents an insightful look at talent and faith, and an insider's view of the music industry. Not surprisingly, it contains the rags-to-riches theme, and hinges on the importance of key people coming into someone's life at just the right time, whether it be a famous musician, or just a good-hearted solid citizen, or even the briefest of contacts in a public venue. We are all connected, Albom asserts, with extraordinary power to make something of the connection. The story is narrated unconventionally by Music, one of many talents we are offered at birth, and one Frankie grabbed copious handfuls of. This determined his destiny. Told on the occasion of Frankie's funeral with a veritable Rolling Stone list of "who's who" sharing their various interactions with Frankie, the tale covers his childhood in WWII Spain as an abandoned baby raised by kindly Bafa Rubio, to his challenging boyhood travel to America as a refugee stowaway, now aptly named Frankie Presto. Consistently throughout the story, Music saves him. He initially learns his craft from a blind drunken guitar player in Spain at the age of 7, and then has contact with all sorts of famous musicians (Duke Ellington, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Roger McGuinn, Wynton Marsalis, and a score of others -- many of whom actually speak on the audio version). Frankie has prodigious talent, but he also has a guardian angel in the form of his guitar strings which unbeknowst to him, come from his birth parents. They are the time clock of and measure of his life, turning blue when he saves a soul, and breaking when he endangers one. Frankie falls into many of the predictable traps of fame, but manages to be saved by his music or the one true love of his life, Aurora, whom he meets as a boy, on the cusp of war in Spain just before his flight to America. With multiple voices and perspectives filling in Frankie's story, it is easy to get caught up in his charmed life and the mystery of its conclusion. Clever references and analogies to music provide a nice framework for this pleaser. ("We all join a band in this life.") Great for any music lover or sucker for a happy ending. ( )
