"What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn in Ruth Ware's suspenseful, compulsive, and darkly twisted psychological thriller. Leonora, known to some as Lee and others as Nora, is a reclusive crime writer, unwilling to leave her "nest" of an apartment unless it is absolutely necessary. When a friend she hasn't seen or spoken to in years unexpectedly invites Nora (Lee?) to a weekend away in an eerie glass house deep in the English countryside, she reluctantly agrees to make the trip. Forty-eight hours later, she wakes up in a hospital bed injured but alive, with the knowledge that someone is dead. Wondering not "what happened?" but "what have I done?", Nora (Lee?) tries to piece together the events of the past weekend. Working to uncover secrets, reveal motives, and find answers, Nora (Lee?) must revisit parts of herself that she would much rather leave buried where they belong: in the past. In the tradition of Paula Hawkins's instant New York Times bestseller The Girl On the Train and S. J. Watson's riveting national sensation Before I Go To Sleep, this gripping literary debut from UK novelist Ruth Ware will leave you on the edge of your seat through the very last page"--… (mere)

I loved this book, I didn't think it was scary, but it was suspenseful. It is possible to have feelings for a high school boyfriend many years later. My mother often talked with regret about a boyfriend she had in high school, prior to WWII. So don't discount first loves, and the traumatic event of an abortion associated with it might make it hard to let go. No one ever said Nora still loved James just that there were still feeling there good or bad they were there. And despite what some of you may think there are crazy women like Claire who think they deserve to win and will take you out to win. If you don't think so then you haven't been in the real world. If you honestly don't think you have known someone like the women in this story then you have a charmed life I'm looking forward to reading more by this author in the future. ( )

Wisp-thin plot, padded out with lots of implausible nonsense about a group of deeply unpleasant people, guests at a hen-do (aka "bachelorette party") at a remote location which ought to have "Crime Scene" on a banner over the front door.

What little plot there is relies on the characters having no common sense whatsoever. Suspense is clumsily constructed by interrupting the endless tedium of the hen-do with brief chapters in which we are told Something Awful has happened -- by, conveniently, a character with amnesia.

Awful: avoid. ( )

I have read all of Ruth Ware's books but somehow I missed this one, her debut book! Of course this would have put her right in my list of authors to follow but I'm glad I found it---now. ( )

I noticed a lot of negatives reviews on this one, but I thought it was entertaining. Most of the characters really aren't very likeable and it is hard to believe someone would be so petty after 10 years of not seeing someone. 4 stars ( )
