Oh, it was OK...there was/is some plot holes that I found that I struggled with, but it was overall OK. ( )

This audio book was not very memorable. Like I listened to it half-way and was like "wait, I've listened to this before"

Would not recommend, still get's two stars because the audio production is fantastic like all Star Wars audiobooks. ( )

8 stars: Very Good

From the back cover: In the war for control of the galaxy between the armies of the dark side and the Republic, former Jedi Master turned ruthless Sith Lord Count Dooku has grown ever more brutal in his tactics. And when he orders the massacre of helpless refugees, the Jedi Council can see no alternative but to take drastic action: targeting the Empire's most cold blooded disciple for assassination. But Dooku is dangerous prey, so the Council decides to bring both sides of the Force to bear - teaming brash Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos with infamous ex-Sith acolyte Asajj Ventress. Though Jedi distrust for the cunning killer who once served Dooku still runs deep, Ventress's hatred for her former master runs deeper. Determined to have vengeance and let go of her Sith past, Ventress must balance her growing feelings for Vos with the fury of her warrior's spirit - and resolves to claim victory on all fronts. It is a vow that will be mercilessly tested by her deadly enemy ... and her own doubt.

--------------

I thought this book was quite well done, and different than I expected. I thought it was going to be a typical spy story, what side is Ventress really on, does Vos have something up his sleeve? Instead it was quite different. It deeply explored the question "Can one use their 'dark side' emotions, just a little bit, for good, or at least to not be destroyed by them?' In the end, I found Ventress to be one of the most complex characters in all of Star Wars. She was a Jedi, then a Sith, and in the end, neither... with a bit of both. SPOILER... I was kept guessing the entire time if Vos had really converted to being a Sith when he was captured. The ending was different than I expected. By bringing in the love story early, I thought was meh, but in the end, it made the characters believable and told the story well. Recommended, and will likely read again at some point.

A few quotes I liked:

"IF we can take him, we an turn him back" Kenobi said.
"You cannot save everyone, Master Kenobi" Plo Koon said, not without sympathy.
Yoda nodded. "Save themselves, they must."

"You've told me your existence has been nothing but pain and loss. Never feeling secure. Never having a home. You deserve so much, and I can get it for us. The life we'll be able to have together once---" (Vos)
"What kind of life will that be, Quinlan?" Her voice broke. "The kind where we are slaves to our hatred? Our rage? That's what the dark side made me. That's what it *does*. Nothing is ever enough. You get more and more but you're never happy. It's a trap baited with all the things you want the most. That life -it's not worth living." (Ventress)

"Remember, you always have a choice to be better. You always have a choice to... to pick the right path. Even if that choice comes a little late." (Ventress) ( )

To think that I should see brave, bald, brash, morally ambiguous Assaj Ventress reduced to a lovestruck blonde in a ball gown, Brought Low By A Man. I am so disappointed. Only giving this two stars as a nod to the technical skill of the writer, the story itself deserves a one.
PS: insult added to injury with that horrid cover of Ventress in a submissive butt to camera pose while The Man stands boldly with raised lightsabre. ( )

On the one hand, this book gripped me from the start. The character development was beautiful... until the very end.

The rest of my comments are a serious spoiler.

very, very, very spoiler.

Ventress totally gets the short end of the stick. In the end, her death brings Vos back to the Jedi order, and Kenobi gives a sermon on what we all should learn from her sacrifice. Anakin was _right there_ and saw exactly how Vos fell, and exactly what his turn to the dark side cost. But it's a meaningless lesson, since we already know what happens in Revenge of the Sith.

To hell with the damn Jedi Council - I want more Ventress!!! ( )
