THE NUMBER ONE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERWHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FEEL TRULY ALIVE?Aged 24, Matt Haig's world caved in. He could see no way to go on living. This is the true story of how he came through crisis, triumphed over an illness that almost destroyed him and learned to live again.A moving, funny and joyous exploration of how to live better, love better and feel more alive, Reasons to Stay Alive is more than a memoir. It is a book about making the most of your time on earth.'I wrote this book because the oldest clichés remain the truest. Time heals. The bottom of the valley never provides the clearest view. The tunnel does have light at the end of it, even if we haven't been able to see it . . . Words, just sometimes, really can set you free.'… (mere)

Haig has penned a well-written book that's packed with many insights for dealing with anxiety and depression. The author skillfully blends his internal struggles with user-friendly tips. For example, he suggests that the very moment we conclude that we have no time to relax is the most important time to do so. He also encourages readers to look for beauty on a regular basis -- even something as simple as a cloud formation outside a window. As for materialism, Haig says that happiness "is not abandoning the world of stuff, but appreciating it for what it is." I genuinely enjoyed this thin but powerful tome. ( )

I know. The title is alarming, and the fact that I felt drawn to read it does not mean that I was close to running out of reasons, even during this most disheartening of years. Matt Haig has constructed quite a remarkable little book with this one, though. There are several actual lists--of reasons to stay alive as well as things that he's found help (and don't) with his anxiety and depression. And then there are chapters of straight memoir, and others of poignant reflection. Although in slightly different flavors from Haig's, I too have experienced both panic-attack-level anxiety and medium-intensity depression, sometimes in unfortunate tandem. His insights were quite helpful, and I think I will come back to this book again next time the Keepers of the Gloom come knocking at my door. ( )

This has been receiving rave reviews and lots of attention for its compassionate and understanding discussion of mental health issues. curiosity piqued I decided to give it a go, all books are good in some way right? I struggled to get through it, It may be helpful for lots of people, but it wasn't really helpful for me.
Just be careful what you're reading I guess and don't feel that if something works for someone else it'll work for you and if it doesn't you're a failure. ( )
