The twelfth title in the series finds the Wind River Reservation without another one of its sacred petroglyphs. The Red Cliff canyon has been home to these sacred petroglyphs, and their accompanying sacred spirits, for a few thousand years. Seven years ago, however, one was pried out of the canyon and stolen. Travis Birdsong sits in prison for killing his partner in the crime. Yet, he has always maintained his innocence in the death and has never been tried for stealing the petroglyph. Attorney Vicki Holden decides to take the case, much to the chagrin of her law partner and lover Adam Lone Eagle and the Wind River Reservation tribes. Vicki is convinced that Travis must be innocent because another petroglyph has been stolen out of the canyon. She is even more convinced after the thieves contact the mission priest, Father John O'Malley, in order to get the tribes to buy the artifact back. As Father John tries to get the petroglyph back and Vicki tries to prove Travis is innocent, the two situations collide.… (mere)

This was a very long book, about 11 hours, and after 12 books, the formula wears: Vicki was too sick; she had two auto accidents; she risked herself to defend someone against injustice; blah-blah. Meanwhile, Father John has staff problems....again. And, we hear about the stolen petroglyphs ad Infiniti. And, a white guy is the perp....again. This book would be pretty good at about 6-7 hours. This is part of the Wind River Mystery series with Father John O'Malley and Vicki Holden. Seven years ago someone chipped a very old petroglyph from the cliff walls where it had been for over 1000 years. Travis Birdsong was suspected of being one of the thieves and it was assumed that he had a fight with his partner, Raymond Trueblood, and killed Trueblood because of it. That petroglyph wasn't found. Now another one is missing, the one called Drowning Man. The tribe considers these to be representative of the spirits. LIke 7 years ago, a mysterious Indian man tries to get the tribe to cough up the ransom money or the stole petroglyph will be sold to a collector. Vicki Holden questions Birdsong's guilt and takes up his case and then attempts are made to kill her. Father John is asked by his superior to take in a retired priest only to find out why the church is hiding the old priest. I like this series.

Another good book in the Wind River mystery series. It's a slow read but I enjoy learning about the Arapaho people. ( )

Stolen petroglyphs and a retired priest threaten the tribes and the mission on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming in another thoughtful, well-done mystery that includes aspects of Arapaho Indian history. ( )
