Book number one in The Ravenels series. Devon Ravenel has inherited an earldom that comes with a lot of debt and more complications that the charmingly wicked bachelor cares to deal with. First there are the late earl’s three unmarried sisters, who still live at the manor house, and secondly, there’s the beautiful, headstrong young widow, Kathleen, Lady Trenear. Sparks fly and passion overcomes sensibility and rules of propriety.

Not bad for a regency romance, and after immersing myself in the genre this month I certainly see the reason why they are so popular, even if I’ll probably spend most of my reading time on other genres. Still, not saying I’ll never read another. They are entertaining.

Mary Jane Wells does a fine job of performing the audio. She sets a good pace, and her narration completely held my attention. ( )

Rating this book is hard because I really liked everything in it, except for Devon and Kathleen and their relationship (which one could argue was the fucking point of the book). I like the parts about saving the estate and the pig-related shenanigans with the twins and, of course, West's transformation from a sarcastic, good-for-nothing alcoholic to a sarcastic, family-oriented land manager. But whenever the plot would drift back to Devon and his attempts to fingerbang Kathleen everywhere in the manor while being annoyed by her, my mind would wander to thoughts of how the conflict between Winterborne and Helen was rooted so much in class expectations of behavior, and how interesting (and sexy) that will be in the next book. Or I'd wonder if the dogs thought that Hamlet the pig was also a dog and if he also thought that he was a dog or if he knew the truth (are pigs smarter than dogs). Or I'd worry that West might have a relapse or die for drama's sake from getting too cold in the river and never get to see his farming equipment in action. God, I worried about that one; I love West. Technically I guess this was a failure as a romance for me because I didn't give a short shit about the characters in the romance but Kleypas is a talented writer and made me care a lot about literally everything else. But if anything bad happens to West or Hamlet in the next book, I will flip a fucking table right over. ( )

Plot is exciting, Devin and Kathleen fight like cats and dogs and it's funny and adorable and it feels real. Their exchange of snarky letters is pure gold.

Cold Hearted Rake - Kleypas
Audio performance by M.J.Wells

First book of a late 19th century romance series. The young Victoria is Queen and the industrial revolution is in full swing. The Ravenel Earldom has just passed to a distant cousin (the titular cold-hearted rake) of the recently and unlamented Earl. The unprofitable and decrepit estate also comes with an attractive young widow and her three beautiful sisters-in-law. Let the fairy tale plots commence!

I enjoyed the characters in this book. It’s a good setup for the rest of the series. Despite the obvious romance between the new earl and the widow, there’s more to the plot than the explicit sexual content. Rapid economic and social changes create unique challenges for the new Earl. The widow and the young sisters are prime examples of the societal and legal restrictions placed on women. Growing pains for all and sundry, but with a light touch. I really enjoyed the pet pig. ( )

A fun start to a new series-Kathleen is a widow after only 3 days of marriage to a hot-tempered Ravenal. Devon, the new lord, initially wants to sell the estate and continue his dissipations in London, but he and brother West find that they cannot abandon the estate and the 4 women to their fate. Well-written example of the Regency romance genre. ( )
