The English king dies leaving no heir. In the churchyard of a cathedral in London, a sword appears imbedded in a stone. It is inscribed with a prophecy. Although many try, no one can budge the sword from the stone. Deep in the dark woods, Merlin the Magician begins to teach 11-year-old Arthur, who lives in the castle of Sir Ector where he's an apprentice squire to Sir Kay. Arthur learns the basic truths of life, but he also runs into the evil Madam Mim, who tries to destroy him. A great tournament is held in London to pick a new king. Arthur, attending as Kay's squire, forgets Kay's sword, and runs back to the inn to get it, but the inn is locked. Arthur, seeing the sword in the stone, innocently, and easily, pulls it out. When the knights marvel at the wondrous sword and question where he got it, Arthur has to prove himself all over again by pulling the sword from the stone.… (mere)

A wizard educates a seemingly unimportant boy.

Completely delightful from start to finish. I think this might be my second favorite Disney movie (after Winnie-the-Pooh).

Humor, spectacle, and magic rule in Walt Disney's legendary classic take, The Sword and the Stone -- now celebrating its 45th Anniversary with exciting new bonus features! Embark on an adventure-filled quest for an unlikely hero! According to legend, only someone with honor, decency, and inner strength can claim the throne of England -- by pulling out the enchanted sward that lies locked in a massive stone. Many brave knights have tried, so it seems impossible that a young apprentice known as Wart could succeed. But with the guidance of the wizard Merlin, help from some hilarious friends, and sure strength of character, Wart just might become England's greatest king. Rated G. 79 minutes.

A legend is sung, of when England was young, and knights were brave and bold. The good king had died, and no one could decide who was rightful heir to the throne. It seemed that the land would be torn by war, or saved by a miracle alone. And that miracle appeared in London town: The Sword in the Stone.
