Born in Ghana, West Africa, with one deformed leg, he was dismissed by most people--but not by his mother, who taught him to reach for his dreams. As a boy, Emmanuel hopped to school more than two miles each way, learned to play soccer, left home at age thirteen to provide for his family, and, eventually, became a cyclist. He rode an astonishing four hundred miles across Ghana in 2001, spreading his powerful message: disability is not inability. Today, Emmanuel continues to work on behalf of the disabled.… (mere)

Great book to read to students about overcoming obstacles! ( )

Emmanuel was born with one leg but never let that dictate how his life would go and he grows up to bike his way across 400 miles. This is a beautiful story about Emmanuel and how his mother forced him to be independent even as a baby and how that shaped him into the determined young men he ended up being. Emmanuel's story is inspiring and everything he accomplished he did on his own despite the doubts of everyone from his own father all the way to strangers in the city. I would recommend this book from pre-k to 2nd grade. ( )

Emmanuel's Dream is an inspirational story of a boy who overcomes his physical challenges. Emmanuel won't let his disability get in the way, he goes to school, works hard for his family, and sets out on a 400 mile bike ride to inspire others with disabilities. Children may get frustrated when they have a physical limitation, but it's important for them to know that no matter what, they can achieve great things. ( )

The inspiring true story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah. From Ghana, West Africa, Emmanuel was born in 1977 with a deformed leg. His father left after he was born: most people in his village believed that Emmanuel would be useless or even a curse. Luckily for Emmanuel, his mother believed in him. She taught him to be self-reliant. He found a way to attend school, his mother carrying him until he was too heavy, even through most children with disabilities stayed home. 15 year old Emmanuel took his dying mother's words to heart, took care of his family and didn't give up. His epic 400 mile bike ride in Ghana brought attention to the ability of disabled people, and spurred on the Ghanaian government to pass the "Persons with Disabilities Act" of 2006. Emotive illustrations help to make this a book that can be used to inspire all and support children facing their own issues. Schneider Family Book Award winner. ( )

Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah is famous for his athleticism. This book does a great job at showing children that those with disabilities can lead fulfilling lives and accomplish amazing things, just like their abled counterparts. I think this book is a great way to start a conversation with young children about life with a physical disability. ( )
