What first got me hooked on Brad Meltzer was his first Culper Ring book, really enjoyed it and Brad's detailed trip through governmental operations. Well I starting to think this one was sort of the winding down of the Culper Ring series as it has lost a lot of its energy as was as some of the most interesting characters. The story is well written but the dialogue doesn't flow quite as easily as before and feels somewhat less natural. There are some interesting historical elements in the story that are not well know and so it makes for interesting reading if for nothing more than some of the historical perspective and places. Even though this is one of Brad Meltzer's weaker works it is really well worth reading as Brad is a very good writer and generally provides the reader with a great story. ( )

This is the first book I've read by this author--at least to my remembrance. I enjoyed the style. I was glad to see that although Meltzer has unmarried characters hook up for sex, there is not a graphic description of the act. These days it seems that thriller/suspense authors are told there has to be at least one sex scene in each book. (My personal preferences are that they'd limit it to married characters but at least in this book I didn't have to skim over pages waiting for the described sex scene to be over and the story to resume.)

I didn't quite grasp the significance of the title. Did it refer to secret service agent A. J. who was often in the President's shadow while on his detail? Did it refer to the historical experiments possibly sanctioned by a past President? Did it refer to the "secret" groups that operate to protect the Presidency but not doing so openly/publicly? Usually I have some clue by the end of the book, but I haven't figured it out yet for this book.

WARNING: SPOILERS MAY LIE AHEAD. READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION:
****

I don't know enough about political history to know if the Culper Ring or the Knights are real historical groups or ones made up by the author. And if they are real groups, I don't know if they really do what the author has them doing in this book.

Archivist Beecher White wants to know what happened to his father. Did his father really die while in the Army? Or is/was he alive somewhere? Beecher's friend Marshall has a father who served in the same unit. Their childhood friend Clementine also has a father (Nico) who was in that same unit.

When a coin with the unit's symbol is found in a severed arm found buried in the White House gardens, Beecher gets called to the White House--and thus starts the unwinding of the tale. ( )

Beecher White works at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. But he is also a member of the Culper Ring, a 200-year old secret society founded by George Washington and charged with protecting the Presidency. Now a buried arm is found at the White House by the President's wife and it seems that President Wallace, never a friend of the Culper Ring or Beecher need help find out who the arm belongs to and who put it there?

Beecher and President Orson Wallace isn't on any good terms since Beecher knows of an incident in Wallace past that could destroy Wallace presidency so them “working” together isn't something that runs smoothly. But Beecher is after information of what happened to his father that died almost 30 years ago and now it seems that the man behind placing the arm could be the one that has the knowledge. But it seems that the Knight of the Golden Circle, a group that supposedly John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald had belonged to is after Beecher and the Culper Ring.

This is the first book I have read by Brad Meltzer and since this is the third book in the Culper Ring series is there a lot of history between the characters, but I never had any problems getting into the story or anything. The book is written in a way that makes it easy to read, just like I did, the third book in the series without having to read the previous books and I liked it so much that I want to read the previous two books in the series.

I love reading books with secret societies and this one I liked very much. I was a bit surprised at the ending and also a bit saddened because of my favorite characters didn't survive, but it also showed the true color of a very powerful man.

I received this copy from the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review! Thank you! ( )

To most, it looks like Beecher White has an ordinary job as a young staffer with the National Archives in Washington, D.C. But few know his other role. Beecher is a member of the Culper Ring, a 200-year-old secret society founded by George Washington and charged with protecting the Presidency. Now the current occupant of the White House needs the Culper Ring's help. The alarming discovery of a buried arm in the Rose Garden has the President's team in a rightful panic. How did they get past White House security? And most important: What's the message hidden in the arm's closed fist? Beecher's investigation will take him back to one of our country's greatest secrets and point him toward the hidden truth about his family history.

This story had suspense and adventure with a lot happening in each chapter and most ending with a cliff-hanger or a surprise. This kept me reading. There was a sprinkling of historical information throughout, which was interesting. A few things were unclear to me in the end and a few things a bit far-fetched but overall an entertaining read. ( )
