An okay read but thought this was a going to be a graphic novel which I needed for a book challenge. Typical super hero storyline with a group of young non-military, people who have recently acquired super-human powers led by a seasoned military man without powers. I had hoped for more of an introduction about how they got their powers or when they first experienced those powers. For those that want a story with more action this might be for you. For me it was a little too short and basic. ( )

Despite appearances, this is not a comic book or graphic novel. It's text all the way.

In 2012, something happened that caused some individuals to develop special powers. Even superpowers. The U.S. government has formed a team of them, or Vanguard, as they call them, to hold off any superthreats that may occur.

While they're beginning their training, a superhero has arisen in Chicago. With invulnerability, flight and superstrength, he's doing his best to police Chicago and whatever other parts of the country he can reach.

And because he's not part of the government team, they just have to stop him. Whoa, the stupid is catching. Admittedly, the guy (Exemplar) is too arrogant to join their team even if they had asked, but they didn't even bother with that approach. Or live and let live. Or heck, requiring him to pass a superhero licensing exam, which would at least make bureaucratic sense. No, they immediately begin attacking him. And when they lose, they go get his ex-wife and set a trap for him.

SPOILER!

Can you say self-fulfilling prophecy? The Big Book of Superheroes, Chapter 1: How to Get a Supervillain to Fight: Creating One Yourself. It isn't explicitly stated that the guy goes to the dark side, but by opposing him, they've pretty much guaranteed that it's going to happen.

And there the story ends. So I can't say whether this story's going to be any good, because what little I've seen of it is build up to a story and a really stupid mistake. I only hope it gets better.

I received an electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )
