I had mixed feelings about this book, Mesmerized, after reading it. What I liked was the connection of the scientific method to the plot of Benjamin Franklin's experience with a hypnotist. What I didn't like about the book was the type of organization in the book. On some of the pages the text jumped all over the page and I found it hard to follow. If I can get over that. aspect, it is a nice informative book. The big idea of the book is to follow the scientific method to discover and figure out your world. ( )

Mesmerized is a nonfiction book written by Mara Rockliff. The book is not only a biography of Franz Anton Mesmer featuring Benjamin Franklin. The book also introduces the reader to the scientific method and shows how Benjamin Franklin used the scientific method to discredit Mesmer and his magical powers.

Franklin is sent to France to try and convince King Louis the Sixteenth and Queen Maire Antoinette to help fincance the American Revolution. When he arrived everyone was talking about how Mesmer could cure any and everything. Doctors were complaining to the king that their patients have lost faith in real medicine. The king called on Franklin to help him solve this dilemma. Franklin used the scientific method to expose Mesmer and his powers.

Through reading this book the reader learns about the scientific method, the origin of the word mesmerized, a history lesson about the American Revolution and Frances involvement. The book also talks about hypnosis, the placebo effect and how from this came the process for testing a new medication that is still used today. The illustrations done by Iacopo Bruno allows the reader to see how people during this time period dressed, which was one of my favorite things about the book. ( )

When Ben Franklin traveled to France to ask for French aid in the revolution, he heard of a man called Dr. Mesmer. Dr. Mesmer was able to wave a wand and cure people of their ailments, or so it was said. King Louis the 16th asked Ben Franklin to see if Dr. Mesmer was the real thing. So, Franklin used the scientific method to see if Dr. Mesmer could really work. It turns out that Mesmer's technique worked only because the patients believed it worked. Mesmer was laughed out of town, and Ben went on to help found the United States.
The book's value is the information and use of the scientific method. It is very clearly outlined step by step, showing how Ben Franklin used it to specifically disprove Dr. Mesmer's techniques. Excellent book for students about to start doing science of their own. ( )

I love the page design in this book, the way that the text and illustrations are arranged on each page makes reading the content fun and interesting. This book is a great introduction for children who are beginning to learn about the scientific method and how useful it can be for identifying truths.
