Tim Gunn, America's favorite reality TV cohost, is known for his kind but firm approach in providing wisdom, guidance, and support to the scores of design hopefuls on Project Runway. Having begun his fashion career as a teacher at Parsons The New School for Design, Tim knows more than a thing or two about mentorship and how to convey invaluable pearls of wisdom in an approachable, accessible manner. While Gunn's Golden Rules showcased Tim "as life coach," imparting lessons based on his personal experiences, Tim Gunn: The Natty Professor will focus on Tim "as teacher." Divided into sections on common themes-leadership, curiosity, diversity, understanding, and empathy-this practical, timely book takes us on a journey through life lessons and uses Tim's own personal experiences, from the classroom to the therapist's office, to illustrate larger concepts. Each chapter will end with a "life assignment," where Tim challenges you to apply the lessons you've learned in practical mentoring or teaching situations.… (mere)

Tim Gunn is a charming person (and he narrates the audiobook which is nice). I read this and got something out of it, but it would probably be more helpful to people who are actually teachers or mentors. =) Some great perspectives and advice. ( )

Before he was hired as a mentor of Project Runway, Tim Gunn was an academic at the Parsons School of Design in New York. Using his experiences in both of these places and a host of others, Gunn breaks down what he calls his T.E.A.C.H. method - truth-telling, empathy, asking, coaching, and hoping for the best as you let a student go.

The advice given here is not groundbreaking. We've probably all heard it before in one way or another. But what Tim Gunn brings to it are some great stories - and as we know, stories will make something stick in our head really well - and a real love for learning and educating. He makes some good points about the difference between teaching and mentoring. He tells the hilarious story about how his simple act of truth-telling got him blacklisted from the Met gala. And he shares the stories of several other people talking about the impact of a teacher in their lives. I do recommend listening to the audio, as his narration really adds to his humor and emotion throughout the stories he tells. ( )

Not really sure what I expected from this book, but it is a collection of Tim Gunn's thoughts on how to teach. He "sprinkles" it with small anecdotes of his own life. I think the way he wrote the text is also the way he acts in real life - like a gentleman! ( )

I love Tim Gunn and have admired him for years. After listening to this book I admire him even more. I will probably listen to this book again in a few months. Great advice. If you like Tim Gunn you will really enjoy this book. ( )
