The seven years between the birth of Etgar Keret??s son and the death of his father were good years, though still full of reasons to worry. Lev is born in the midst of a terrorist attack. Etgar??s father gets cancer. The threat of constant war looms over their home and permeates daily life.
What emerges from this dark reality is a series of sublimely absurd ruminations on everything from Etgar??s three-year-old son??s impending military service to the terrorist mind-set behind Angry Birds. There??s Lev??s insistence that he is a cat, releasing him from any human responsibilities or rules. Etgar??s siblings, all very different people who have chosen radically divergent paths in life, come together after his father??s shivah to experience the grief and love that tie a family together forever. This is a collection of well told, interesting, intensely human stories from real life.
The first story start with the birth of his son and we carry with a handful of stories for each of seven years, not all that good, but with good. ( )

Funny and enjoyable, though I still prefer his fiction. (It's just me, I'll always prefer stories to memoirs.) ( )

There was an elephant in the room through all of this book that was addressed very briefly in the last chapter and then kind of just dismissed and forgotten. And that was distracting for me.

Otherwise, this was a bunch of fun, comprised of many humourous moments told in a way that's quite uplifting and appreciative of life. ( )

Memoir/essayesque by Israeli author Etgar Keret (2015) of the first 7 years of his son's life. The first chapter starts with the birth of his son during a terrorist attack. The chapters are 7, from the birth of his son to the death of his father. Though the author denies belief in God, the title is from the Bible and references the seven good years of grain in Egypt. The writing shows what it is like to parent in the midst of terrorist activities. It's a quick read, the conflictual subjects are sidestepped mostly. ( )

What an amazing read. This is Keret's best book yet. The tone of each essay kept me turning the pages, being both entertained and moved. He writes with a keen eye toward both the physical world and our emotions in reaction to the things that happen to this. And, the stories were so relatable. He's willing to say the crazy things we think, about both the ridiculous and the mundane experiences we have. This book really spoke to me. Best book I've read in a long while. ( )
