An extraordinary book. Told at first in a series of stills - illustrations telling a rollicking adventure, we move nearly 200 years, to have the story continue with the descendants of the original cast. I'll return to this review later, when the dust has had time to settle. But it was an impressive reading experience. ( )

Lush illustration (more than half of the tale) makes this historic fiction an engaging read -- I enjoy wordless picture books, don't you? The written narrative is not nearly as delicious.
For young readers struggling with a sense of loneliness within their own family or processing loss, Selznick's fantasy may be just the thing. ( )

Cosa sono quelle diavolerie che derivano dalle immagini? Le parole cancellano le immagini, ma, nonostante tutto, vedi anche le parole (che diventano immagini nella tua testa).
Le immagini, nella loro immediatezza, fungono da maschera alle parole, fungono da maschera alla verita’ contenuta nelle parole (Nietzsche).

Si vede quello che si ‘vuol’ vedere: il gatto che cammina al piano di sopra e’ lo spirito di Marvel oppure solo il gatto?
Miao, dice il gatto… allora era solo il gatto! (anche se non lo vedo).

Aut-Aut (Kierkegaard): siamo alle solite con le dualita’, sempre li’ a dividere, Jenseits?

La meraviglia (marvel? oppure thauma? (Aristotele)) che nasce guardando le immagini ci fara’ scoprire un tesoro?

How I did not know of Bran Selznick all these years is beyond me. The artistic way he draws and writes is absolutely beautiful. This story was beyond words. From beginning to end, I was drawn in and couldnt put the book down. I think I spent just as much time looking at the drawings as I did reading the words. Adults will, hopefully, have a different interpretation of this book than a child aged 10. ( )

An innovative page-turner for all. ( )
