Ollie by Olivier Dunrea is part of the Gossie & Friends series. Ollie is about an egg named Ollie who is waiting to be hatched. Gossie and Gertie are getting impatient waiting for Ollie to hatch. This is a good book for a kindergartener who is learning to read. This book is great because of all the other books that go along with it. ( )

I liked the way this book shows all of the different animals, and gives children opportunities to identify the animals shown. Also, I liked the silliness in the book, where the goslings try everything to get Ollie to hatch. ( )

This is a really cute book about friendship and patience, and definitely a perfect read for beginner readers. The story and words used are simple to understand, while the pictures are simple yet attention grabbing.

I liked the book Ollie for two reasons. First, the way the book is written flows very well as the story progresses and matches the illustrations on each page perfectly. The text is there to describe the illustration as well as continue the story which is very helpful for younger readers who may not have a firm grasp on all words. An example of this is the line “Gossie pokes Ollie with her bill” along with the text the picture shows the duckling, Gossie, poking Ollie’s egg. This helps the reader identify what is going on by using the text as a script for what is happening in the illustration.
Secondly, the illustrations in this book are amazing and help to enhance the story and move the story along as if the reader is watching it in action. Illustrations like the one in this book are specifically helpful to younger readers because even if they can’t completely understand every written word they can still follow along with the story using the illustrations. One example of a strong illustration in this book is the one which shows Ollie hiding in the straw still protesting he doesn’t want to come out of his egg. The picture is clear and easily understandable for younger readers even if they don’t understand the text under the picture.
The big message of this story is that the world is a scary place and while it may seem easier to stay somewhere that you feel safe and secure eventually you have to venture out into the world. This is shown throughout the story as Ollie continuously refuses to leave the safety of his egg to experience the unknown waiting for him outside. At the end though he realizes that he must come out if he ever wants to meet his friends Gossie and Gertie. ( )
