A Caldecott Honor and a John Newberry medal well deserved by the tandem Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson.
Matt de la Peña is a wonderful writer for young children. This book is an exemplary model. The ideas are fresh. The. depicted love between a grandmother and her grandson is full of emotional details which, I hope, will raise questions in the little minds it is read to.
The collaboration with illustrator Christian Robinson is glorious. Colorful yet simple enough to be immediately grasped without a grown up support.
There's a lot to admire in this work of art. I highly recommend it to readers of any age group (I mean it). One can only smile when reading this book and enjoying its illustrations again and again. ( )

Listened to Dolly Parton read this as part of her "Goodnight With Dolly" series. I love her soothing voice and how she always sings a little. https://donate.imaginationlibrary.com/goodnight-with-dolly/

I liked this book because it shows us the small stuff that we take for granted. It’s about a boy and his grandma having to take the bus and walk through the rain and the little boy doesn’t understand why they have to walk in the rain or why they can’t get a car. When they get on the bus he hears a song playing and realizes that there’s so much to be seen on the bus and they are not the only ones that struggle and some people have it way worse than them. . In the end they work at a soup kitchen so The little boy can be thankful for what he has. I think that I could use this in my Social Studies class to talk about diversity and different parts of the community. ( )

This book is about a boy and his grandmother taking a trip across town after church. The boy asks his grandmother many questions about life and why he does not have all of the things that other people have (car, iPod, etc.). The grandmother replies to his questions with wisdom about the world. This book illustrates the wonders of the world and tells the reader to look at your everyday life with happiness and wonder. This would be great for an English class or a Social Studies class because it teaches a great lesson about life. ( )

This is a book about a boy who is jealous of the way others live and the riches they have. He rides this bus with his grandma and she teaches him a valuable lesson, and basically shows him how to see the world without materialistic things but to look at the world around him. It is a very humbling book. I think it can be used to show kids that even though people come from different backgrounds, and someone may have more than you do, that there is always something to be happy about. That the world around us is an amazing place and there's more value in the little happy things in life than there is materialistic things. ( )
