What do we really know about John the Baptist? Most people only know that he was a prophet strangely given the name John instead of the same name as his priestly father Zechariah. He forsook his inheritance of royalty and the priest hood to go into the desert and live an ascetic life style sustained by wild honey and the desert grasshopper, and clothed only in a harsh garment of camel's hair and a leather girdle. Author Steve Dalton gives plenty of food for thought in his captivating account of the early life of John the Baptist, as he imagined John's life might have been. John's' brief association with a group given to super piety who practiced repetitive washings as a form of ceremonial cleansing opened his eyes to his true calling: "The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God" Isa. 40:3a KJV, enabling him to reject Temple Washings and become the innovator of Christian Baptism practiced today.… (mere)
