Jalaluddin Rumi, founder of the Sufi Order Mevlevi (whirling dervishes) wrote in the thirteenth century the "Mathnawi", his masterpiece: six books of poetry and imagery of such great power in the original Persian, that his recitation produces a strange exaltation and complex in the consciousness of the listener. His writing can not be categorized exactly as poetry, due to the special complexity of ideas and form: it contains jokes, fables, conversations and passages of pure and exquisite singing. It is a great example of the method of dispersion, by which an image is endowed with a multiple impact to infuse it into the mind of the reader. There are many versions of the "Mathnawi": it has been summarized, extracted, given a literary form, and so on. The version of R.A. Nicholson, who in this edition has been proscribed to facilitate its reading, is quite faithful to the original work and the sense that Rumi printed on the text.
