Eleven unique short stories that stretch from a rural Canadian Mennonite town to a hipster gay bar in Brooklyn, featuring young trans women stumbling through loss, sex, harassment, and love. These stories, shiny with whiskey and prairie sunsets, rattling subways and neglected cats, show growing up as a trans girl can be charming, funny, frustrating, or sad, but never will it be predictable.… (mere)

A lot of these stories made me feel some very specific emotions that I had forgotten about because it was around when i started transitioning or even years before that. I think it's pretty impressive to tap into those so efficiently, at least I was impressed, but I dont really enjoy being reminded of those feelings because so much of it was trauma LOL

I maybe shouldn't have read it all in one sitting bceause a lot of the stories were very samey, like they needn't have been broken up into short stories because they all seemed to be about the same person (though I went nuts over the fact that "Portland" and "Not Bleak" appear to take place in the same universe, easter egg). but no seriously not every trans person lives in the north, works in a bookshop, and is into bdsm...

a few of the stories rlly shone though. "Portland Oregon" definitely stood out from the rest becuz it was different but it was without a doubt my favorite, 5 stars for that one it was devastating. "not bleak" and "winning" were also very captivating. those are the 3 that I would revisit or recommend. ( )

The stories in this collection are a bit uneven, but I liked them more and more as I got further in. Many of them seem oddly dated by virtue of being set perhaps 10 years ago. The interrelated world, where the protagonist of one story shows up as a minor character or in the background of another story, gives a nice effect, although it was a little forced at points. ( )

pros: ownvoices short story collection where every story has a trans woman main character. some are lesbian, some are bi, some are straight, so there's a variety. some stories also have trans side characters or other queer friends. one story had a mother-daughter pair where both of them were trans and that was nice. the stories also went into all kinds of trans experiences.

cons: this book was just... really exhausting to read for several reasons. it's full of triggers, heavy topics, swearing, berating each other - some of that is stuff that I don't have a problem with normally, but after a while it just felt too much and I got bitter and I barely wanted to finish the book. also it has this writing style where it doesn't clearly separate the dialogue and that was nice for a while but it also got exhausting.

tldr; this just wasn't really for me ( )

cw: sexual assault, kink

This was such a lovely collection of short stories, focusing on trans women. Most of the stories had a pretty emotional impact on me, which says a lot about the writing. Each story is fairly quick to get through. While I enjoyed it, a lot of the characters kind of melded together for me and I felt that there was too much of an emphasis on a certain kind of sexuality (almost all of the sex was very rough, which could be triggering for some). I dropped one star for those two reasons. ( )

A Safe Girl tells the tales of 11(12 if you're picky) trans women and their stories. Through a unique writing style Casey Plett takes you in and immerses you into their lives: their lovely, scary, bitter, hopeful, despairingly lovely lives. ( )
