The author's journey in researching trauma and how trauma has been treated in America.

The author is one of the foremost authorities on trauma and helped to get trauma studies recognized for their importance. He explores the history of how trauma was understood; the misdirections of the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries and how WW1, WW2, and Vietnam compelled a reconsideration of trauma and PTSD; what trauma looks like in the brain; how trauma is expressed; childhood vs. adult trauma; and various methods used to attempt to help people recover from trauma.

The author makes a compelling case regarding what trauma is and how it effects growth and development. It would be good to see more done with biofeedback. That so much about trauma has only been ascertained over the past few years should give us all pause about how much more there is to learn, discover, and understand about such things. We do best to live so as to not traumatize others!

The author gets a little triumphalist in the account. Nevertheless, it is understandable why so many highly recommend the work. One does well to grapple with it and learn from it. ( )

Very interesting read. Seeing scientific studies and objective evidence of the physical responses produced by trauma certainly help put people's reactions to trauma into perspective. The chapters on different treatment modalities also are useful personally and I would imagine professionally as well ( )

Here's a weird thing. This book has this quote from John Bowlby: "What cannot be communicated to the [m]other cannot be communicated to the self.” and it's referenced as the paper which is available for free here: http://www.psychology.sunysb.edu/attachment/online/ainsworth_bowlby_1991.pdf But there's no sign of that quote?

This is a book review, I know how to write book reviews. In fact, sometimes I get paid to teach people how to do it.

So glad I read this book. It's given me a whole new perspective which, as someone suffering from the effects of trauma, is incredibly precious. ( )

This is the best book on trauma that I have ever read! It is so refreshing to hear about treatments that do not re-traumatize the person on the receiving end. I am definitely going to give EMDR and meditation a shot. I also like that my journal and art practices were affirmed as therapeutic treatments. Both have helped me way more than all the useless drugs or talk therapies I've tried. ( )

Packed with science and human stories, the book is an intense read that can get technical. Stay with it, though: van der Kolk has a lot to say, and the struggle and resilience of his patients is very moving.
