Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows--everyone knows--that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn't, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her. But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.… (mere)

My hold finally came in at the library and it was well worth the wait! A loose retelling of Beauty and the Beast that felt like I was reading an entire series within one book!

Agnieszka has grown up happy and carefree in her beloved valley village, despite the dangers of the Wood that lurks on their border. The only thing protecting them from the Wood’s corruption is the cold and powerful magician known as the Dragon, who rarely leaves his tower. In payment, the Dragon demands one thing: every ten years, he selects a young woman to serve him. Agnieszka knows he will choose Kasia, the prettiest and most talented girl in the village. But on the day of the selection, Agnieszka’s life is ripped out from under her.

How do I put into words what I loved about this book? The world is so rich and layered. I loved the instinctive, untamed nature of Agnieszka’s magic compared to the ordered, structured, rule-following magic of the Dragon — and the way they were able to work together! And the themes of corruption and purity and redemption, the devastation that results when bitterness and hatred are allowed to take root in the heart, the importance of love and forgiveness and peace…💕 ( )

I think I would've rated this higher if I'd read it, instead of listened to it.
I know it was narrated like that on purpose, but damn, those pauses are annoying!

A refreshing take on the Fantasy genre, with a Poland-inspired setting and plenty of elements borrowed from fairytales rather than Tolkien. Agnieszka, the book's narrator and protagonist, suffered a little from falling into stereotypical heroic tropes, but it fit the tone of the book so I won't complain too strongly.

The plot developed naturally (though in some surprising direction) and wrapped up very neatly. I found the pace a little uneven; some scenes dragged on too long for my tastes. The action scenes felt a little flat and distant, but I can't put my finger on precisely why. I had the same experience with the author's "Temeraire" series. The romantic sub-plot also didn't quite connect with me, mostly because I found one half of the relationship to be unlikeable.

Even considering my complaints, my overall impression of the book is still very positive. "Uprooted" is funny, intriguing, and unusual, with effectively deployed elements of horror and sentimentality. I recommend it. ( )

Every ten years, the Dragon takes one of the 17-year-old girls from the valley to live in his castle. They emerge changed, having been isolated from everyone but the Dragon -- and sometimes, when he's out fighting the evil magic that comes from the Wood, they are entirely alone. Agnieszka never expects to be chosen.

A Russian fairy tale spun into world-saving adventure. Lots of tropes, most notably the naive but strong girl who is forced into close quarters with a prickly man many times her age, where the proximity grows into deep appreciation and then love (people tend to love or hate that one). It also avoids a lot of common tropes, like a female main character lacking close female friends. I thought the evil in the book was very well done, the writing was compelling, and my minimal familiarity with Eastern European fairy tales mattered not a whit. Definitely worthwhile for adult fairy tale readers, and for folks who like fannish storytelling even in non-fannish settings. ( )

Uprooted is not, as I thought it might be after those first three chapters, any of the following: a Beauty and the Beast story; a somewhat quiet tale about learning one’s magical abilities and negotiating a relationship with one’s teacher; or a story that includes intrinsically-gendered magic. What it is, is a kingdom-level fantasy with great magic and an engaging narrator—which packs a surprising amount of plot into its single volume. I recommend it highly.

The pages turn and the Kindle screens swipe with alacrity. An early expedition into the Wood to rescue a long-missing Queen is particularly white-knuckle. Temeraire fans will be pleased to know that a superb tower-under-siege sequence demonstrates that Novik has lost none of her facility for making complex battle scenes clear and exciting. And Agnieszka remains a scrappy, appealing hero throughout. It’s just that one can’t help but be reminded that Novik’s Temeraire series will conclude next year as a nine-novel cycle and wonder why a writer so skilled at pacing a long, complicated chronicle over multiple books has crammed this story into one.

It’s as if Novik is overcorrecting for the kind of Hollywood bloat that causes studios to split fantasy-novel adaptations into multiple films. Here, she packs an entire trilogy into a single book. Agnieszka’s corridors-of-power adventures in Polnya’s capital have kind of a middle-volume vibe to them, while some fascinating late-breaking revelations about the nature of the Wood definitely feel like they deserve their own dedicated installment. I felt this most particularly in Agnieszka’s evolution as a character. While it’s thrilling in the book’s final third to read about her taking control of her own magical identity as a latter-day Baba Yaga, it does feel as though it’s happened without giving her the opportunity to explore a few blind-alley identities on the way there.
