Sweet, funny, entertaining memoir - mostly surface, little depth - a quality sitcom... ( )

While I commend NPH for being inventive and using the choose your own adventure style it makes it very hard to be sure I read everything and it all felt out of order somehow. ( )

For the first time, the glorious illusion of performance, the way the experience is simultaneously real and fake, exerts its primal pull on you. It thrills your soul. It also engages your mind. It raises all kinds of existential dilemmas. Why is it, for instance, that when you're onstage as Toto you're on all fours, but when you're making your way down the yellow brick road, which winds its way through the rows of the audience, you're on your "hind legs"? The director feels there's no other practical choice, so it's okay. You don't. You consider it a gross inconsistency that besmirches the meticulous realism of the rest of the high school production of The Wizard of Oz.

So, I liked Doogie Hauser, MD when it was on, but not with anything like the near religious devotion inspired by, say, The X-Files. When it went off the air, Neil Patrick Harris vanished entirely out of my life (neat trick, NPH!) until a dear friend made me watch that thing with Dr. Horrible. (Huge thanks, pal!) So it is mystifying to me to understand how this man, who is clearly approximately 200% geek (see above quote) has not been a bigger part of my existence. I'm glad I remedied that. He tells his story with candor and wit and somehow makes the ultimate egotism of putting forth an autobiography seem almost humble. (There were parts I wish he'd left out. I mean, Elton John has enough people staring at him. It's sweet that their kids are friends. But really, could have just kept that private, you know?) On the whole, a very enjoyable read, though not a hugely edifying one. (But biography as a genre is like that: one person's epiphany is another person's "Yes, and?")

The format was an issue for me. I should perhaps disclose up front that I am apparently congenitally bad at choose your own adventure books. I always end up lost, and I always end up just going back and reading the whole thing through cover to cover to make sure I didn't miss any thing. This was no exception. And I don't mean I got a bad ending. (I liked the horrible deaths and fictitious or pointless asides.) I mean I landed in the middle of his romance before I ever got the beginning, and the aftermath of Rent before he was cast. I hate stuff like that, and it probably added an hour or two to my reading time. Did not like.

Nonetheless, I recommend the read. (And from the Q&A above, it sounds like this would have been an excellent book to try Audible on. Live and learn. But, hey, look at the Q&A feature doing something useful!) I don't yearn for half stars, but if we could give them I think I would give this a 3.5. And here is my truthiest ending:

With your last breath you scream, "Help me, Joss!" but your cry is quickly throttled by the sandy grit filling your throat. The last thing you see is Joss Whedon running to you wailing, "No, Neil! Not before we shoot Dr. Horrible 2: The Desolation of Moist! Your body is never found. ( )

This book is really, really fun. I like hearing about his family, his experience in Broadway, and his work in Dr. Horrible's sing-along blog. One interesting thing that was different from other choose your own adventure books was that the book was fairly chronological from front to back so
It could kind of be enjoyed if you just wanted to see everything in his life. I think more autobiographies should be written this way. ( )

Old reviews went missing. How does save not working?

2.5 Stars. It was okay and funny at times. ( )

Meinen allerersten Job hatte ich in einem Buchladen. Dort habe ich die Kinderbuchreihe "1000 Gefahren: Du entscheidest selbst!" entdeckt.
My very first job was working in a bookstore. It was there that I discovered the Choose Your Own Adventure books.
