I have an affinity for reading stories based on the events of WW II. This story was up my alley and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. ( )

Had me gripped from the start. This is an ofttimes harrowing tale of bravery and sacrifice during the second world war in occupied France. It made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. ( )

Many books have been written about WWII but this book features the story of the ordinary people of France which isn't often featured.

Vianne and her sister Isabelle haven't been close since their mother died and their father couldn't cope. When war starts nothing has changed. Vianne lives with her daughter after her husband goes to fight and Isabelle is thrown out of her latest school and arrives at her father's.

The women respond in very different ways both of which requires great strength of character. It's hard for the reader to imagine what they would do if faced with the same situation.

There are many dangers faced by them alongside the privations of living in an occupied country.

Although fiction this is how people actually lived and it's written such that you can really see how they suffered.

As war progresses the tension rises so will everyone survive? Whatever happens everyone will be changed irreparably. ( )

I gave up on this. The story was flimsy and the writing was loose. Perhaps it's really a young adult book? ( )

I enjoyed this book and the story kept me reading but it wasn't until the end that I was actually moved by the plot. Good story, if not a tad predictable. The prose was just OK. ( )

If I have learned anything in this long life of mine, it is this: In love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.

I know that grief, like regret, settles into our DNA and remains forever a part of us.
The stairs unfold from the ceiling like a gentleman extending his hand.
"I think, as this war goes on, we will all have to look more deeply. These questions are not about them, but about us."
"We are all fragile, Isabelle. It's the thing we learn in war."
If I had told him the truth long ago, or had danced and drunk and sung more, maybe he would have seen me instead of a dependable, ordinary mother. He loves a version of me that is incomplete. I always thought it was what I wanted: to be loved and admired. Now I think perhaps I'd like to be known.
