Fantasy. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. A year ago, Sunny Nwazue, an American-born girl Nigerian girl, was inducted into the secret Leopard Society. As she began to develop her magical powers, Sunny learned that she had been chosen to lead a dangerous mission to avert an apocalypse, brought about by the terrifying masquerade, Ekwensu. Now, stronger, feistier, and a bit older, Sunny is studying with her mentor Sugar Cream and struggling to unlock the secrets in her strange Nsibidi book. Eventually, Sunny knows she must confront her destiny. With the support of her Leopard Society friends, Orlu, Chichi, and Sasha, and of her spirit face, Anyanwu, she will travel through worlds both visible and invisible to the mysterious town of Osisi, where she will fight a climactic battle to save humanity. Much-honored Nnedi Okorafor, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards, merges today's Nigeria with a unique world she creates. Akata Warrior blends mythology, fantasy, history, and magic into a compelling tale that will keep listeners spellbound.… (mere)

This one didn't hold my attention or get me as invested as the first one. I feel like the author knew where the story was going but I didn't as a reader until it was happening and I feel that not having a clear goal tends to make me lose attention. ( )

Even more than the first, this book moves with the influence of Wole Soyinka coming more and more alive, but mixed with vibrant contemporary fantasy. I loved the first book in the series, but this second installment in the series was a book I couldn't have put down if I'd tried, and Okorafor's storytelling was ever more dynamic as the book progressed.

Truly, I'm going to let this one sink in and then dive into the next book when I can spare a whole few days to lose to it.

Absolutely recommended. ( )

I remember from the early aughts, the children up late for first-day book releases, the homemade costumes and unofficial house quizzes, the 12:01 midnight screenings, the beautiful debates between 8-year-olds on "Book vs. Movie." Is that happening now, for Akata Witch? It should be happening now. Get on it, world. ( )

As a follow-up to the strength of Akata Witch, this novel carries its own twists and plot, though I don't believe it could be read on its own. It is a second coming-of-age tale for Sunny, but I would not have felt connected to this version of Sunny without having read the first book.

While I fully understand the multiple iterations of creation of self that are mandatory in becoming a fully-functioning adult, this one lacked much relatability for me.

The scenery and imagery makes up for this disconnect with a character, though. Setting is what I attached to most in this part of the series. ( )

The story moves quickly, interesting things happen, the characters show some development so that's good. The magic is magical, and almost everything works to get to the conclusion. The final actions in Sunny's big battle did seem a bit arbitrary and contradictory what with all those read beads flying about. ( )
