"Loyalty, commitment, the fight against injustice--these are the things that have always driven Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. If they make a promise, they keep it. Even if it could get them killed. When Elvis Cole is hired to locate a woman who may have disappeared with a stranger she met online, it seems like an ordinary case--until Elvis learns the missing woman worked for a defense contractor and was being blackmailed to supply explosives components for a person or persons unknown. Meanwhile, in another part of the city, LAPD officer Scott James and his patrol dog, Maggie, enter an abandoned building to locate an armed and dangerous thief, only to discover far more than they expected: The fugitive is dead, the building is filled with explosives, and Scott and Maggie are assaulted by a hidden man who escapes in the chaos, all as a bloodied Joe Pike watches from the shadows. Soon, Scott and Maggie find themselves targeted by that man, and, as their case intertwines with Elvis and Joe's, joining forces to follow the trail of the missing woman as well. From inner-city drug traffickers to a shadowy group of Afghan war veterans with ties to a terrorist cell, the people they encounter on that trail add up to ever-increasing odds, and soon the four of them are fighting to find the woman not only before she is killed ... but before the same fate happens to one of them"--Publisher's web site.… (mere)

P.I. Elvis Cole is investigating, looking for someone at a home where no one answers the door. As he is leaving, police descend and he sees someone run out of the house. He runs after, but is stopped by police officer Scott James and his dog Maggie. There is also someone dead inside and a room full of explosives. Before James ran into Cole, though, he and Maggie came face-to-face with the guy who ran. They clearly saw each other’s faces.

This was good. It’s a lot of testosterone, maybe darker than much of what I prefer in a mystery, but what brought the rating up a bit for me was Scott and Maggie. I love their relationship! I also like that we are given the same scene (or important parts of the scene) from a few different perspectives. This is only the second book that follows Scott and Maggie. It’s too bad there aren’t more, as I find them so much more interesting than Elvis Cole and Joe Pike who have far more books in their respective series. ( )

Elvis Cole is hired to find a woman, who has disappeared and is up to no good. While tracking her down, he finds himself in the middle of a homicide, where there are explosives. So in comes Scott James and his trust K-9 dog, Maggie, who sees the killer escaping, and himself becomes a target. Homeland Security then intercedes in the LAPD investigation and Elvis is sure he is being lied to, but not sure by whom or about what so off he goes to get Joe Pike and Rob Stone to help. The woman's agenda is different than anyone initially suspects, and Elvis, Scott and the team have to cross a few lines to make sure the proverbial you-know-what does not hit the fan. I thought the book was too slow, with time shares among too many of Crais's growing list of characters, but when things picked up, it was a thrilling ending. 3.75 stars. ( )

This is the most recent in a long line of Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novels, but also includes LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his K-9 patrol dog, Maggie. We first met Scott and Maggie in the stand-alone mystery "Suspect." There is no need to have read any of the preceding books, other than perhaps more depth of character for the reader. Crais does a good job of giving enough background on the characters to enable a new reader to follow the story. (But as "Suspect" is one of my favorite books, I highly recommend going back and reading that one for Scott and Maggie’s story.)

In this mystery, Elvis (ex-cop) and Joe (ex-military) are hired to locate a missing woman who has been mourning the death of her son at the hands of terrorists, and she appears to have embezzled $450,000 from her company. While Elvis is staking out a house owned by a man who might have ties to the missing woman, he’s inadvertently pulled into an attempted felony warrant arrest by the police, including Scott and Maggie, which involves a completely different crime. These two seemingly unrelated cases just might be connected.

Elvis’ humorous comebacks, the dangerous mystery that always accompanies Joe, the likable Scott and Maggie, and the plot twists and turns make this another mystery by Crais that does not disappoint. (But really, go back and read "Suspect.")

Possibly my favorite Mystery/Thriller book for 2015. Also my first Robert Crais book.

"Every second we have with these fine animals is a blessing. No creature, human or otherwise, will love you with such devotion, or trust you so fully."

I want a Maggie ( )
