"Loyalty, commitment, the fight against injustice--these are the things that have always driven Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. If they make a promise, they keep it. Even if it could get them killed. When Elvis Cole is hired to locate a woman who may have disappeared with a stranger she met online, it seems like an ordinary case--until Elvis learns the missing woman worked for a defense contractor and was being blackmailed to supply explosives components for a person or persons unknown. Meanwhile, in another part of the city, LAPD officer Scott James and his patrol dog, Maggie, enter an abandoned building to locate an armed and dangerous thief, only to discover far more than they expected: The fugitive is dead, the building is filled with explosives, and Scott and Maggie are assaulted by a hidden man who escapes in the chaos, all as a bloodied Joe Pike watches from the shadows. Soon, Scott and Maggie find themselves targeted by that man, and, as their case intertwines with Elvis and Joe's, joining forces to follow the trail of the missing woman as well. From inner-city drug traffickers to a shadowy group of Afghan war veterans with ties to a terrorist cell, the people they encounter on that trail add up to ever-increasing odds, and soon the four of them are fighting to find the woman not only before she is killed ... but before the same fate happens to one of them"--Publisher's web site.… (mere)

This is the most recent in a long line of Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novels, but also includes LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his K-9 patrol dog, Maggie. We first met Scott and Maggie in the stand-alone mystery "Suspect." There is no need to have read any of the preceding books, other than perhaps more depth of character for the reader. Crais does a good job of giving enough background on the characters to enable a new reader to follow the story. (But as "Suspect" is one of my favorite books, I highly recommend going back and reading that one for Scott and Maggie’s story.)

In this mystery, Elvis (ex-cop) and Joe (ex-military) are hired to locate a missing woman who has been mourning the death of her son at the hands of terrorists, and she appears to have embezzled $450,000 from her company. While Elvis is staking out a house owned by a man who might have ties to the missing woman, he’s inadvertently pulled into an attempted felony warrant arrest by the police, including Scott and Maggie, which involves a completely different crime. These two seemingly unrelated cases just might be connected.

Elvis’ humorous comebacks, the dangerous mystery that always accompanies Joe, the likable Scott and Maggie, and the plot twists and turns make this another mystery by Crais that does not disappoint. (But really, go back and read "Suspect.")

Possibly my favorite Mystery/Thriller book for 2015. Also my first Robert Crais book.

I want a Maggie ( )

I picked up the book because it's book #2 with Scott James & Maggie. I really liked their parts of the book, but wasn't thrilled with the rest of it. ( )

First Robert Crais book. I'm guessing if I'd read at least some of the previous books, I'd have a better handle on the various cast of characters and their backstories, so I'll throw that out there. That's not to say this isn't a standalone book, just that it would have been easier to understand who everyone was and how they all fit in. The plot was okay. An explosives expert wants to find out who killed her son at a suicide bombing in Nigeria. This puts her in the middle of a crime gang in Los Angeles (which seemed a little improbable honestly). Throw in some crooked cops, bombs, and murders and you have this book.
I freely admit that Scott James and Maggie were my favorite characters, especially the parts from Maggie's POV. Scott is a K-9 cop and Maggie is his german shepherd trained in bomb-sniffing. I want to go back and read some of their series and maybe some Elvis Cole. ( )
