Surprisingly, Gaiman does little to alter the common version of the Hansel and Gretel story. He does nothing at all to modernize it, nor to set it in a specific time period, but instead he simply gives his characters more voice. The story may be told from a relatively omniscient viewpoint, but we are given just enough of Hansel's inner dialogue and the emotional turmoil of the wood cutter to make them stand out.

What makes this book special, though, is really Mattiotti's dense illustrations. The overwhelming black tones give the story an appropriately horrifying feeling, while the perfectly placed patches of white keep the eye from being overwhelmed. This treatment not only accurately captures the quality of light (and lack-there-of) in the old world forest, but also serves to remind readers of the positive outcome and hope in this tale. ( )

Neil stayed very true to the original tale, I'm glad he did. There was no sugar coating, no magical animals to save the day, no darkness taken away. Why ruin a good tale? I'm glad Neil decided to re-tell it and I'm sure the Brothers Grimm would like this. Their story was treated with respect and certainly was not "disneyfied". Paired with these unique illustrations, this was just a delight to read. Yet another beautiful edition to add to my 'life's library'

Stunning. ( )

I am not a fan of Neil Gaiman, but I needed a quick fairy tale to fill a prompt on the Summer Reading Program. I originally checked out Stardust, but got home and realized that it was not a graphic novel but rather an illustrated novel. So Stardust went back to the library that day and I picked out this one. Again, illustrated novel but at only 56 pages was doable.

The story was fine - it's the same story we all grew up reading. There was no backstory to the witch living in the forest, no nuanced to the relationship dynamic between the kids and their parents. It was very superficial. The art was dark - black and white illustrations that was heavily on the black ink, to the point where I had to wash my hands after reading this book. I wished the pages were laminated to prevent the ink from transferring to readers' hands. I am not an artist but I think it would have better to use pencil drawings rather than ink drawings - the ink made the illustrations look more like ink blobs. There was not distinct artistic style seen since it was all so dark.

It was quick read that filled a prompt, so it did the job I picked it for. But it wasn't anything special. ( )

The art is interesting, but I didn't feel like the story added to or transformed the tale in an exciting new way. It's a solid, highly readable version of the fairy tale, but I'm not planning to book talk it this summer or talk about it at any of the conferences we're attending this year. ( )
