The names of all the places made me put it down for awhile. I found some help online http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/nameofthewind/images/a/a4/Manicmuncher_under.... (TYSM!)

I've been listening (a re-read) to the author narrate the story. I think reading it myself, as I did the first time, so I can see the pix and back-read sentences, worked better for me. Even having the map (from the link above) next to the book, so I had a visual about where she was, upped my enjoyment. I've thought of DNF'ing the audio a couple times but so far I'm still listening. ETA: I found my old notes inside the physical copy (below) so yeah. I'm going to DNF the audio and re-read myself someday. obsess much?

Author's Foreward:

You might not want to buy this book. ...

Yeah... I thought we were going to get a little more insight into the world of the Kingkiller Chronicles. A little more about the University. A little more about Auri.

I guess one out of three ain't bad?

Basically, it's Auri being strange and re-arranging junk. Also there's a riveting scene of Auri making soap.

On the more positive side, there is some rather beautiful wordplay here. That's one thing that Rothfuss can do particularly well: wrote evocative descriptions.

Honestly, I found the Endnote the most interesting. A star just for that. It's always interesting to see into the mind of a writer. I didn't find the story itself "disconcerting, off-putting, or confusing" but rather odd and boring. So it goes. It probably just wasn't for [me].

Author's Endnote:

... If you're one of the peopel who found this story disconcerting, off-putting, or confusing, I apologize. The truth is, it probably just wasn't for you. The good news is that there are many other stories out there that are written for you. Stories that you will enjoy much more.

This story is for all the slightly broken people out there.

I am one of you. You are not alone. You are all beautiful to me. ( )

I love Patrick Rothfuss and I will probably read everything he ever publishes. I also really like the character of Auri. This book is not an easy read though, and it really doesn't tell any kind of story. But it's still beautiful in it's own way. It fits...or Auri fits her story. At the very least it provides an interesting insight into Auri and helps readers understand her a bit better. ( )

This novella centers on Auri, a secondary, but intrguing character from his Kingkiller trilogy. While the story is well written and illustrated, it probably appeals more to those who have recently read his two Kingkiller novels so Auri's character is better remembered. Unfortunately, I became disinterested as she is the only character in the book: "running around in the sewers doing Feng Shui [moving objects around] and kissing inanimate objects." And, the afterword was espacially galling, trying to suggest that if you didn't like the book, there was something wrong with the reader, such as being too mainstream. Patrick, it's high time to finish "Doors of Stone." ( )
