The Necklace is a quick jolting read. The ending was rather sad and I felt pity for Matilda and her husband. It left me lingering upon various scenarios that could have transpired in the lives of the couple. Why did the couple not reveal the truth to Madame Forestier? What held them back to do so? The embarrassment, the trust, or something else?

I am still pondering over the fact that had the couple revealed the truth to Madame Forestier what could have happened? Would she have gotten mad at the couple for the loss? Would she have gotten away with 500 Francs? Would she have been kind to the couple and forgiven them for their mistake?

Nevertheless, the sacrifice of the husband was what made me smile. During each demanding stage he proactively listened to his wife's desires and fulfilled them to make her happy. Both of them worked together tirelessly for 10 years to return the borrowed money which illustrates their strong bond even during hardships. ( )
