Simple read like the rest, but the last couple have been a little too formulaic - I even guessed who was going to be murdered as soon as they were introduced in both books. So far as I know, this is the last one in the series (unless more are coming). ( ) All the angst is finally over: Kathleen has decided on her career path and her love life. All that's left to do now is solve murders and herd cats. There are no heavy questions hanging over this 6th entry in the series; Kathleen and Marcus have sorted themselves out and are learning to work together. There progress of the lack thereof is tested when a woman drops dead during a fundraising gala after eating a piece of chocolate - one of hundreds handed out randomly to the guests. The woman had only been in town for less than 24 hours and hadn't told anyone she was coming, but it turns out she had quite a few connections to people in town and Kathleen finds herself the recipient of information not offered to the police. The characters of this series are the big draw. They're likeable; the kind of people you'd enjoy having in your life. They're normal, hard-working, and kind. The setting is small-town northern Minnesota and this one takes place in the weeks leading up to Christmas. I sort of wish I'd known that before reading it the week before Halloween, but other than mentioning decorating a few Christmas trees, the book is not overly seasonal. The author was canny with the mystery plot. I get the feeling she likes to take plot formulas and twist them around; using them against themselves. It was good; better than the average cozy. The high point of the book was, as it always is, Owen and Hercules. Their feline antics are slightly less magical in this book than previous, but they more than make up for it in sibling drama. Poor Hercules and his little purple mouse - honestly I became a bit verklempt over the whole thing at the end. Just a little. The Magical Cats Mystery series is one of my all-time favorite cozy mystery series! I enjoy the feline antics of the mysteriously gifted Owen and Hercules and I really like the main character, Kathleen Paulson. A Midwinter's Tail is the 6th book in the series. Although I'm a bit obsessive about reading a series in order, a reader could jump in with book 6 and still enjoy the series. But to get all the background on the characters, the cats, and happenings in Mayville Heights it would be best to start at the beginning. :) The basics: Winter has come to Mayville Heights. Kathleen is busy planning a fundraiser for the library's Reading Buddies program. The fundraiser is ruined when the ex-wife of a prominent resident drops dead in front of everyone during the event. Everyone at the fundraiser was given a box of fancy, handmade chocolates. But someone tampered with Dayna Chapman's candies. Someone who knew she had a severe allergy to nuts. Suspicion immediately turns to Burtis Chapman, her ex-husband. Kathleen believes Burtis is innocent. So with the help of her friends and two wonderous cats, she once again is on the trail of a murderer! I like this series because of the cats of course.....Kelly makes them special, but it's not over-the-top. Just fun! And I like the characters. Kathleen is independent, intelligent and creative. And her friends are sweet and quirky. It just all combines for a enjoyable cozy mystery! On to book 7, Faux Paw! What starts out as a great fundraising event turns into two people sent to the emergency room and one dead body. As Kathleen tries to leave the detective work to her detective boyfriend, she inevitably finds herself standing in front of the murderer and the first to solve the mystery. This is, as always, a highly entertaining mystery filled with loveable characters (human and feline!) and a heartwarming and satisfying ending. A great winter read!
