In the picture book biography, author Jen Bryant thoughtfully recounts the life of Peter Mark Roget and writing of his thesaurus. Inspired by Roget's original hand-written manuscript and its lists of words as well as Roget's other scientific classifications and illustrations, illustrator Melissa Sweet illuminates Roget's life with mixed media and collage. The margins and word art are filled with lists of words from Roget's original thesaurus.

To make sense of the world around him, Peter Mark Roget made lists of words. Starting at ta young age, Roget was focused on finding 'the right word'. Although Roget continued on to tutor, study and practice medicine, and raise a family, Roget never stopped making lists. Ultimately, he wanted to make his thesaurus available for everyone not just doctors and scientists. In 1852 he published his thesaurus of a 1000 lists organized by idea for easy access.

Peter Roget’s early love of words and lists led him to create Roget’s Thesaurus, now recognized worldwide. His childhood and adult life are illustrated in beautiful detail. Timeline, Author’s Note,

Author/illustrator team Jen Bryant and Melissa Sweet, who have also collaborated on such titles as A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams and A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin, turn in this picture-book biography to the subject of Peter Mark Roget, and the groundbreaking thesaurus that he created. A list-maker from a young age, Roget was also a doctor, teacher and scientist, and was already a well-known figure in the intellectual circles of nineteenth-century London, when he published his first thesaurus in 1852. This was a work that would become immensely influential, not just in the English-speaking world, but across the globe...

I enjoyed The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus quite a bit, appreciating both the informative text from Bryant and the somewhat frenetic mixed media illustrations from Sweet, who was awarded a Caldecott Honor for her work here. As a word lover, I have a weakness for conceptual art that makes use of text - think Joseph Kosuth and those influenced by him - so I enjoyed Sweet's use of a diverse range of words and quotations in her artwork. I found it quite appropriate, moreover, given the subject matter at hand. I also greatly appreciated the back matter here, which presents a timeline including both events from Roget's life and important scientific and historic developments, as well as notes from the author and illustrator, a list of sources and a list for further reading. Recommended to young word lovers, and to picture-book readers seeking engaging biographies. ( )

This book is about a boy named Peter who at a young age begins making lists of words that are similar to each other. Peter begins writing down more and more of these lists until eventually as an adult he publishes his own thesaurus. I think this is a great book to read aloud to an ELAR class who are preparing to write stories or journals. This can be used to introduce students to a thesaurus so that they understand the purpose of one and how to use it when writing. ( )

This book is all about words. In this book the showing to how the first Thesaurus was produced. Peter loved words and this is where his lists came into play. He always wanted the perfect and concise word. He would even put them in different languages sometimes to help learn latin. Throughout his years this is how the Thesaurus was created. He had a love of lists for words and wanted to share them with the world.
