Overall, this was an interesting read, but not extremely compelling. It is mostly poetry with a few short stories. A couple poems in here are worth a read (such as Uterine Titans), but some are not great.

The poems and stories focus on some interesting issues, though I felt I would have gotten more out of this with more context behind each author or the situation they were writing about. I was hoping for more information about the "causes" mentioned in the title. I like the idea behind publishing work from unheard-from or persecuted people, but there is no information about the authors of each work so the reader is left to guess. ( )

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

I like poetry but it isn't something I go out of my way to read. However, this book has boosted my love of poetry. It is an amazing collection and one I am sure to read again. ( )

There is considerable variability in the quality of the stories and poems.

There are some that are very good - Ketchup Kid for example is a well crafted indictment of the inequalities that exist in modern America, while Ruined Goods is made all the more powerful by its simplicity. However, there are others, such as Milestone, that are potentially very good stories but don't feel like they have been polished.

Indeed, the sense that the stories need editing is something that stayed with me for most of my reading of the book, not so much basic proofreading to pick up typos (although there are a few of those - such as the word 'to' where it should read 'too') but to redraft clumsy wording and rushed or awkward passages.

I received a copy of this book through the Library Thing Early Reviewers programme in exchange for an honest review. ( )

There are a few gems in the collection (Uterine Titans was probably my favorite), but overall, it was just mediocre. I'm not sure what causes all the essays and poems were meant to represent, and I'm not convinced each author had much experience with the topic they chose to write on, with a couple of notable exceptions.

If you're looking for excellent essays and verse on social justice, you're better off looking elsewhere. ( )
