Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Liz Swados sets the stage for a hilarious, cathartic poetry slam, with casting and sets by Joe Cepeda. One summer morning in the sizzling city, seven kids gather on a street corner to share the power of poetry. As they move through the neighborhood, the kids transform their experiences -- standing up to a tough kid, slurping spaghetti and ice cream, a good "hiccup cough sniff" cry -- into a poetry slam celebrating the strength and energy of their own unique voices. Elizabeth Swado's wonderfully aural work is given visual dimension by Joe Cepeda's colorful, character-ful paintings. So come along and heed the call: Hey you! C'MERE!… (mere)

This poetry book contains various poems about different things, they are goofy and humorous. Personally, I did not like this book. They are very child-like and random, which for me as a reader did not hold my attention. There is great use of poetic devices that could be beneficial for students being introduced to poetry. I think this book is better suited for younger age groups and would be helpful and beneficial for them if they were learning about poetry. I would not read this book again, unless it was being used in the classroom. ( )

In this book we follow a poetry slam group through the city and their adventures. Instead of prose writing , each page is a different poem used to narrate the story. Each poem is a rhythmic observation of life around us. The subject of the poems vary from bullies to weather to ice cream and more. Definitely a fun read for younger audiences ( )

What a fun little poetry book! There are a ton of fun onomatopoeias in this that make me wanna rap when i read these, haha. I like that these use colloquial language like "tawlk," "itds," "suwposed" and "bayad." ( )

When I first opened this book I was very skeptical of it, but as I moved through the poems I really fell in love with them. I read this to my fiancée and she laughed at me the whole time because of how into them I really got. Some are silly, but they are really fun to read. They do a good job of showing poetry slams and I think kids would really enjoy them. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. The illustrations were bright and lively. I thought the poems were also catchy and relatable. This book touched on the good, and bad in life which I feel is important. The poems didn't act like life is perfect, the poems explain some of the bad in life, but show that good will come soon after.
