One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. Moving back and forth in time-from the actor's early days as a film star to fifteen years in the future, when a theater troupe known as the Traveling Symphony roams the wasteland of what remains-this suspenseful, elegiac, spellbinding novel charts the strange twists of fate that connect five people: the actor, the man who tried to save him, the actor's first wife, his oldest friend, and a young actress with the Traveling Symphony, caught in the crosshairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet. Sometimes terrifying, sometimes tender, Station Eleven tells a story about the relationships that sustain us, the ephemeral nature of fame, and the beauty of the world as we know it.… (mere)

Fabulous. Completely absorbing and unexpected. I often found it difficult to emerge from the novel’s plague-ridden world back into our own. It is a marvelously imaginative story, combining such interesting strands and characters into a cohesive whole: an artsy woman finds material success as a shipping exec, a town establishes itself in a derelict airport, a comic book passes from hand to hand, Shakespeare crosses from civilization to post-civilization. Well written as well. ( )

So, I’m a bit conflicted on this one. I was spoiled very early on on two key points and one of them may have had a huge impact on my feelings towards the book. I was a bit irritated in the beginning with all of the epithets used for the symphony characters so I went looking for a guide or something that should tell me who was who. (Something along the lines of “Gil - First Clarinet”; August - The Violin”.) The first one I looked at didn’t say any of that. It said “Tyler Leander/The Prophet”. It also said “Deiter - Killed by the prophet when...” I just wanted a symphony cheat sheet. I got the book ruined. ( )

Great apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic novel...hits all the marks of the genre. Maybe the only thing keeping me from 5 stars is just a hint of dissatisfaction with the character development...like, I wanted them all to triumph (or just live, at least) but I'm not sure if I really *cared* about them. There was a lot of story to balance here. Audio was terrific. ( )

Now it might be because I’m a touring Theatre actor, that happens to live in Vancouver Island … who’s living in a Pandemic world at the moment … but this book really connected with me.
Really enjoyed the writing style.
Last quarter of the book really picks up as well when it comes to post apocalyptic world. ( )

No new ideas, too many characters, not enough plot. An enticing passage here and there, and it's fun to see post-apocalyptic Canada for a change, but overall this book is forgettable. ( )

Station Eleven is not so much about apocalypse as about memory and loss, nostalgia and yearning; the effort of art to deepen our fleeting impressions of the world and bolster our solitude. Mandel evokes the weary feeling of life slipping away, for Arthur as an individual and then writ large upon the entire world.

Survival may indeed be insufficient, but does it follow that our love of art can save us? If “Station Eleven” reveals little insight into the effects of extreme terror and misery on humanity, it offers comfort and hope to those who believe, or want to believe, that doomsday can be survived, that in spite of everything people will remain good at heart, and that when they start building a new world they will want what was best about the old.

Mandel’s solid writing and magnetic narrative make for a strong combination in what should be a breakout novel.
