Three-Body Problem is the first chance for an English-speaking audience to experience this multiple award winning phenomenon from China's most beloved science fiction author, Liu Cixin. Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.… (mere)

I feel like at least half of this book went straight over my head. The details about multiple dimensions and proton folding and unfolding made whooshing sounds as they passed me by. Despite that, though, I'm pretty sure I got the general gist of the story.

It was very interesting reading a book set in China by a Chinese writer. There were a lot of things, like the Cultural Revolution, that I was sort of aware of from history classes, but reading about it from this point of view made it much more real.

My 14-year-old has read and loved the entire series. He's much smarter than I am. :) ( )

Interesting ideas, but badly executed in a work of fiction. So much of the hard SF element was exposition of one character explaining a concept to another, that it just became tedious. There were chances to make it interesting, by focusing on one or two supporting characters, but instead the main character was just a doofus who was being acted upon rather than acting. Overall just a slog to get through, and trying to separate the wheat from the chaff was more effort than it was probably worth. ( )

A book that unfortunately has been crushed under its own hype. Thanks, Obama!
While it was fun to get a piece of speculative fiction from a non-European writer, the book is still hastily-written, blog-phenomenon fiction, chunked in ways that detract from the fun ideas. Though the book was indeed written in 2006, I don't know if I would've gone for a third of the book being a video game then either. The book's detective story and characters get squished between said video game, a jump to the alien world, and a long unchecked memoir by a single character, delivering a hasty finale and lots of truncated conceits, feeling almost intentionally jumbled especially toward the end. The goofy cop is the only really vivid character, the only who has any agency in anything. Though I'm super happy for Liu for his success and admire his educated imagination, I just don't go for this unedited, unplanned serial narrative. Nor do I think that such is the fault of Ken Liu's translation: I know nothing about Mandarin, but I know all about trying to make other languages work in English, and I have reason to believe that Ken Liu's translation is in fact clever. The original style took away the excitement. Recommended only for the most dedicated sci-fi reader, which I am not, and certainly none of the loco things that people are making of it, such as a measuring stick for Chinese sci-fi etc etc. ( )

I read a lot of scifi and fantasy series as a kid, but stopped almost entirely in adulthood. I've sought books in these genres meant for adults that have a sense of scale and stakes as expansive as the series I read as a kid. Genre epics, really. This and Red Mars are the only two books I've found that meet these conditions. The genre fiction I've read either isnt aiming to be an epic--parable of the sower, handmaid's tale, Friday black, and others--or is, but the writing is so bad that it ruins the storytelling and worldbuilding--game of thrones, Lord of the rings, the sparrow.

Red Mars and Three Body Problem have adequate to compelling writing and characterization. They really succeed on the strength of plotting and ideas. They also both deal quite directly with political economy and history, which groujds the hard scifi elements in familiar political contexts. And these books are pointedly political. I look forward to continuing these series.

This book impressed me in a number of ways. Firstly it was hard to put down once I started. Also, because the author is Chinese and the narrative set in China, I found that in addition to embarking on great odyssey in Sci-fi , I was getting images of Chinese culture and mysticism which was for me both unexpected and welcome. Much of the first half is set in or around the Cultural Revolution and the influence of these times on some of the academics in the sciences is telling.

As the story unfolds the complexity deepens culminating in the bewildering realization that we have already been infiltrated. The descriptions of the alien technology and capability are truly mind bending and fascinating! Hard Sci-fi encapsulated.

It takes tens of pages or so to start getting into the meat of the science fiction, so don't give up on this book if you think it starts off kind of slow. Very imaginative and creative book, with several intriguing concepts. It helps if you have a bit of a science background, but it is written so that anyone can enjoy this book. Can't wait to start the second book of the series! ( )
