In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, unearths a sentient book called Vella. Once a young sorcerer-bookbinder, Vella was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been collecting information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen's world faces. Elsewhere, in a land ruled by the priests, Rielle the dyer's daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows she has a talent for it, and that there is a corrupter in the city willing to teach her how to use it, should she dare to risk the Angels' wrath. But not everything is as Tyen and Rielle have been raised to believe. Not the nature of magic, nor the laws of their lands. Not even the people they trust.… (mere)

The worlds are interesting, the magic system is promising, and the characters are fine. But the endings feel extremely rushed. I say worlds and endings, because this is two unrelated stories in unrelated worlds, that just happen to share a magic system. Very weird that the stories don't meet up at any point in this book - I expect them to in later books. Some seemingly important characters are introduced, but then discarded without a second glance in order to wrap up the stories. I still want to read the next book, but not the best start of a series. Rating 3/5. ( )

Setting aside around the halfway mark. There's nothing really wrong with it - it's engaging, built on some very interesting worldbuilding concepts, and well written - but I just didn't feel like anything was happening. Oh, one character's found a book that's really a person, and another has thrown away her entire life, and there are big damn questions about the nature of magic over both of them, but none of it really felt centred or urgent. Sadly there are just too many books and not enough reading time at present to stick with things I'm not loving.

Really enjoyed the approach to magic as something that depletes the local environment and the need to discover methods for resolving this difficulty. ( )

Unfortunately, I was not able to push through and finish this novel. I just could not get into the story or the writing style of the author. I found it choppy and I didn't like any of the characters. I found myself skimming through it to look for something interesting, and eventually I just had to put it down. There are mixed reviews about this novel, with many saying that it is fantastic and worth the read. For me, however, this novel fell short of expectations and I don't think I will be giving it another chance. ( )

While a little slow at the beginning, this book certainly picked up. As always I love a unique magic system, and Canavan's system of limited magic, that when used left pockets of 'soot', was truly interesting. I did not realize that this book was a part of a series, and I was a little disappointed to realize I had come to the end of the book without having the story wrapped up. However, I am now very excited for the next book in the series, and I look forward to reading it. An interesting read ( )
