Colin, the narrator of the story, has fallen in love with his straight boss. Not exactly an unusual situation in male/male fiction, but the circumstances in which he has to decide if he is ever, and I mean ever, going to do something about it are just a little more extreme than "normal". And even tough he figures nothing much can go wrong in the longer term, since the meteorites have already started falling, he still fears rejection in the shorter term. What could be more embarrassing than being rejected in the last few hours or however long the world still has? Turns out that the short term is not a problem, well, not much, but when the world doesn’t end – that is when his real problems begin.
Nigel thinks he is straight. Even after two failed marriages leading to his lack of feeling attracted to women, some very unhappy dates since he started his new job, and the realization that the only person he actually likes to spend time with is Colin – he doesn’t even entertain the thought that he might be interested in the man. Possibly because he is also his employee, but that is never mentioned, and doesn't ring true. However, the beginning of the end outside their combined warehouse/office building makes him be a little more honest about his curiosity what it would be like to do something he's never done before – and doing it with Colin has him al excited.
What follows is some hot and heavy action, but when the world doesn't end, both Colin and Neil have some thinking to do. At first they avoid each other, but when Colin can’t deal with it any longer, he takes the initiative. What follows made me smile even more. If you like "end of the world" threats that turn out to be false, if you're curious about what two men might be doing in the last few moments they think they have, and if you want to know what they do when the world survives, then you should give this short story a go. It's fun, entertaining, and will probably make you smile.
